METROPOLITAN UNION MEETING OF COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Wanganui Metropolitan Rugby Union was held at Spriggens Park last evening, Mr J. Moye presiding. Those present were Messrs H. Whiting, C. Stewart, A. Delves, J. C. Ward, A. Graham, C. Clark, W. R. McElwain, F. Thompson, N. Reid, and W. Deerness. A letter was received from the Wanganui Jockey Club agreeing to the use of the centre oval of the racecourse for the 1938 Rugby season at the same rental and under the same conditions as for last year. The chairman announced that points count in the senior competition in both divisions as from last Saturday in the Rangitikei district and next Saturday for the Wanganui Union. It was decided to jnform the Pirates Club that the electric lights would be installed on the training area next week. Mr J. C. Ward said that the Primary Schools’ Rugby Union was quite prepared to permit the union to run school competitions on Saturday mornings. Mr N. Reid said that the mattei had been discussed by the Referees' Association who would arrange, if necessary, referees for the games. Mr C. Stewart said he had arranged for two prominent members of the Pirates Club to be present when the competitions start next Saturday morning. Mr J. Moye said that the fact that the boys were playing in games under the control of the union's referees would ensure that the boys learned the rules of Rugby. When the difficulty of obtaining ' grounds for the schools’ competitions was being discussed, Mr McElwain suggested that the bluegum plantation area between the gaol and Spriggens Park could be levelled and converted into a fine Rugby ground for the use of these boys. Another meml~u’ said that the suggested area could be made into a sports ground without much work and two grounds could be made. It was pointed out that at least three grounds would be required for the competition. Mr H. Whiting considered that the area suggested by Mr McElwain would only be sufficient for one ground. It was decided io endeavour to secure the use of the grounds at Hurworth Schoo!. Mr McElwain said that lhe referees would be making a periodical inspection of sprigs and players would not be permitted to take the field if their sprigs were defective. The following draw was agreed upon for next Saturday for the fifthgrade competition: Kaierau v. Marist, on Racecourse No. 3 ground, at 1.30 p.m.; Pirates v. Technical College, on Technical ground, 1.31> pm.
