WINTER RACING

EGMONT STEEPLECHASE GOOD CARD AT HAWERA The usual excellent fields have been secured lor the winter meeting tomorrow and Saturday at Hawera, even though the steeplechase itself has thinned out more than antici pated. There are seven events on the card for each day, the other besides the steeples and the hurdles, being open fiat events for the middledistance horses and over seven furlongs respectively, and thre hack events decided over five, six and seven furlongs respectively. The Egmont Steeplechase has often been won by a horse who has not quite lived up to expectation afterwards, but there are other winners who have subsequently achieved high fame. Tuki, the 1925 winner, for instance, won the Grand National Steeplechase the following season, and Makeup, the 1932 winner, won the Great Northern Hurdles the next season. Copey, another winner, had previously won the Great Northern Steeplechase. The Adamson Steeplechase on the second day at Hawera has also at limes afforded a valuable line. Back in 1924 Sir Rosebery won on the second day, and then went on to take the Great Northern Steeplechase a month later, and the following season ho won both Great Northerns. Aurora Borealis also scored in the Adamson Steeples a month before winning the Great Northern Steeplechase; and Omeo was successful two years prior to his Wellington Steeplechase success. The totalisator at Hawera will be operated on the single-pool system, and special facilities are being provided so that investments may be made by patrons of the official stand and the grandstand without having to brave the elements should the weather be unfavourable. The first race is set down to be run at 11.45 a.m., the order of the events being as follows: Tongahoe Hurdles . 11.45 Telegraph Hack Handicap ....... 12.25 Hawera Handicap 1.5 Egmont Steeplechase -•— 1.45 Hack Scurry Handicap - 2.25 Mcßae Cup - 3.5 Tawhiti Hack Handicap 3.50
