OPTIMISTS’ CLUB
PAST YEAR REVIEWED
“During the past season 25 club meetings have been held and a growing interest and club spirit have been very encouraging features,*’ states the report of the Wanganui Optimists’ dub to be tabled at the annual meeting to be held to-day. “The various speakers maintained s high standard and the many interesting and instructive subjects dealt with were well received by the membership. To the speakers the club’s thanks are given. “Special meetings were held throughout the season, the most important of which were the Coronation luncheon on May 11. when Rev. A. C. McLean addressed the club on the Coronation ceremony; a club tea on June 8, when a decision was madto revert to the evening meeting; a friendship tea on June 27. when individual optimists displayed a diverlity of talents, this being a most enjoyable function; the mothers’ tea on September 14, and the Christmas tea, when Optimists and their women friends enjoyed a happy hour followed by a theatre party at the Majestic. Other interesting features instituted were the birthday calls and the introduction of the initiation ode, the words of which were written by Mr C. S. Brown. It is noted that the average attendance was 64 per cent, of the membership. This, the report states, should be improved during the coming year. “The service ideal was put to practical purpose, three service meetings being held on June 8. August 17, an t December 7, when members brought illustrated journals, produce, and toys for distribution among the needy. “The balance-sheet shows a satisfactory financial position when it *s considered that several items of expenditure, not likely to recur, had to
be met, e.g., scrolls, membership badges, and conference expenses. "At the close of last season the membership stood at 34. The report regrets the loss of two valuable members in Alf Ramsay and Ken Bassett, who have gone to New Plymouth and Christchurch, respectively. It is hopeci to immediately organise a membership campaign to increase members for the 1938 season.”
