Meteorological Office, Wellington, Monday, May 2, 3 p.m. General Situation.—An extensive anti-cyclone covers New Zealand, the highest pressure being over the northern part of the South Island. A very shallow depression is moving on to south-eastern Australia. Forecast.—Winds: Light to moderate south-easterlies prevailing at first about and north of Cook Strait but gradually turning to east and north-east; light to moderate north-east to north over the South Island and freshening somewhat. Seas (N.Z. waters): Rather rough with a considerable easterly swell north of East Cape and rather rough at times in the far south-west, otherwise slight to moderate. Eastern Tasman Sea: Light to fresh east to north-east winds and rather rough seas in the northern portion; moderate north-east to northerly winds and slight to moderate seas elsewhere. Weather: Cloudy to overcast in the Auckland province and the far South, with scattered showers or drizzling rain. Otherwise fine. Pleasant day but cold night temperatures with light frosts in many places.
