ON HAWERA TRACKS

WINTER PREPARATIONS SATURDAY'S GALLOPS Despite the proximity of the Eg-) mont meeting, there was not a deal of galloping on the Hawera; tracks on Saturday morning, write*! “Goldspur” m the Hawera Star. The ■ outside of the course proper was open’ along the back and the going wa* 1 heavy. Lord Cavendish <Monkley> begai-i better than Prime Quality (Cole in I a sprint over two- furlongs, but the* pair finished together in 254 sec. r< I was a useful eltort for two-year-oldo | and both are progressing favourably. | Viracious (Callagher) shaded Tri-1 lit ha (Sexton) over five furlongs from! a standing start in 1.12, the first three occupying 41 4-ssec. The former appeared to have little in reserve at th_ finish. Disturbed (Callagher; and Lucrece • Sexton) finished on terms at the conclusion of a similar distance in 1.13 i. Neither greatly impressed. Dancing Lady (Farland) was not asked to do her best to record l.io over similar ground. She invariably races best on a light preparation. Gold Glare (Farland) and Aymon •Callagher) could have improved on their time of 45sec. for three furlongs. They were under a good hold throughout. Fafner (Monk ley) led Winsome Lu • Farland) over the first thiee of half a mile, but the latter finished well u be alongside her companion at the post in 541 sec. Fafner hit out well in the soft ground and Winsome Lu was not bustled. Present intentions arc for her to race on the second day at Hawera, but she is likely to require a couple of outings before being seen at her best. In Command (Cole) was responsible for a fair exhibition over seven schooling hurdles. F. Fergus is mentioned as his rider at Egmont. Brioni (Cole) gave a safe display over live hurdles, but did not have much pace on. Race Call arrived back from Avendale on Friday and he is being treated to a well-earned spell of two months. With seven wins and a dead-heat to his credit this season he has paid his way handsomely. Student Prince strode over a rounu on the sand at a strong pace. His owner-trainer, J. Brown, is contemplating trying the Laughing Prince gelding as a jumper within the next fexv weeks, although he does not intend racing him over fences just yet.

Happy’ Hit, the dam of Student Prince, displayed great promise as a jumper when under the care of L. Knapp at Awapuni some years ago, but unfortunately' a promising career was terminated by unsoundness.
