’PLANE WRECKED

( RASH DURING NIGHT FLIGHT [ Per Press Association. J CHRISTCHURCH, May 1. While doing half an hour’s nightflying test for his B licence at Wigram last night, a member of the Marlborough Aero Club named Speight made too low an approach when coming in to land. The machine struck a haystack on the south side of the aerodrome and was almost completely wrecked. The pilot, escaped with a slight cut on the forehead. Speight had passed all other tests for his B licence in the previous three days and was doing the night-flying lest under observation of the examining officers of the R.N.Z.A.F. He flew the machine, a Canadian fleet twoseater training biplane belonging to the Marlborough Club, from Blenheim on Wednesday and last night was the first clear night on which night-flying could be done. Officials of the club flew down today to inspect the machine after it had been lifted from the haystack. The wreckage was packed on a lorry for return to Blenheim. Except for the engine, the machine is practically a complete write-off.
