MRS. H. k. McDonald At the residence of Mrs. Douglas Sandford on Wednesday afternoon a large number of friends of Mrs. H. K. McDonald gathered to tender her a handkerchief afternoon before her departure from Raetihi. After afternoon tea Mrs. Sandford asked Mrs. McDonald to accept, thej gifis. She expressed the general re-; gret at Mrs. McDonald's impending departure and wished her happiness and prosperity wherever she might decide to settle. Mrs. McDonald feelingly replied. During the afternoon two competitions were indulged in with the following as the ultimate winners: First, competition: Mrs. C. D. Scarrow. Lucky number: Mrs. G. R. Godby. The gathering dispersed following the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." DRUIDS’ LODGE The fortnightly meeting of Miro Lodge No. 79 U.A.O.D. was held on Wednesday last, when A.D. Bro. Clifton presided over an attendance of some 25 members. Following the disposal of the usual business, D.P. Bro. Davis presented the report of the committee set up to investigate the conducting of an indoor cowls rinks tournament throughout ;the winter month. In brief, the effect of the committee's recommendations was What a rinks tournament should be commenced immediately, that games of 11 heads should be played, that one substitute should be allowed per tema per night, otherwise the iteam should forfeit if unable to make ,up a team and that one game on the two-life system should be played after each regular lodge meeting in addition to the usual individual competi|tion which is to be continued, as in 'the past. Six teams had been drawn 'by the committee. The committee's i proposals were the subject of consid‘erabie discussion and were finally adopted. The first game was played after the closing of the lodge. P.D.P. Bro. Drury, who is shortly to leave the 'district, announced that he would like to donate the cost of the trophies for ' the new rinks tournament. A vote of ■ thanks was carried by acclamation. During the evening the initiation of a new member was impressively performed by the officers. It was announced that the past officers would occupy the chairs at the next lodge meeting on May 11.

VALEDICTORY MR. AND MRS. D. D. McLEAN I On Wednesday evening over one hundred friends of Mr. and Mrs. D. I D. McLean. Parapara Road, tendered Ithem a complimentary dance in Coleman's woolshed prior to their departure from the district after a residence of 28 years. Mrs. McLean was presented with

a beautiful bouquet, of autumn flowers by Mrs. H. Sommervllle. Mr. W. Craig, following the supper Interval, expressed lhe regret of the district at the departure of them guests. He then called upon Mr. W. Glenn to perform the main function of the evening. Mr. Glenn made reference to the prominent pari Mr. McLean had played in the public life of the district—from a time «hcn the Parapara Road was but. n trj.'k through bush-clad hills. "He is lhe kindest man I have even known." said Mr. Glenn, "and both he and his wife have done their duty to the district. both publicly and privately.' a token of esteem from the Mangawhero Valley he asked Mr. and Mr.;. McLean to accept a silver coffee and tea service. Mrs. H. Sommervllle, on behalf of the old residents, and Mr. Scarrow, on behalf of the younger generation, both in humorous vein eulogised lhe guests of the evening. Mr. McLean, in returning thanks, first paid tribute to the assistance of his wife. He stated that he regretted his inability to adequately express tn words his thanks for the wonderful evening. The district had brought, to both he and his wife great happiness and he thanked them most sincerely for the glorious gifts of friendship the residents had bestowed upon 'hem. Mr. McLean then spoke in reminiscent mood, making many references to humorous incidents in the early days. He finally returned thanks for the very serviceable and handsome gifts.
