HARTGILL HANDICAP WIN DANNEVIRKE MEETING AT WOODVILLE ONE FOR SOUTHERN BLOOD (Special Reporter.) Slippery scored a popular win in the principal event, the Hartgill Handicap, at Woodville on Saturday When the Dannevirke Racing Clubs annual meeting was concluded in line Though overcast weauicr before a :atisfactory attendance. The course *as not as soft as it was on Friday, md the finishes in several races were dose and interesting. The totalisator igain showed a decrease, the amount put through being 19382 10s, as against £10,529 last year, the aggregate for the meeting being £16,582, as compared with 119,901 last year. The decrease for the meeting was thus £3319, or about 16 per cent. Count Willonyx was lavourite for the Tipapakuku Steeplechase, but Southern Blood and Given had too many guns for him over the last three furlongs. In a punishing finish Southern Blood just beat Given, the pail Deing well clear of Count Willonyx and Padnos. Red Sun, the second favourite, ran off, ana he was pulled up after going about seven furlongs. There were some thrills at the double in front of the stands, and the second time over Southern Blood gave his backers a scare with a bad jump, and Power Chief went over a wing and Anderson made a great recovery. With three furlongs to go the leaders had the race to themselves and Southern Blood and G.vcn drew away from Count Willonyx, the first-named winning by a short neck. Count W illonyx, a neck in front ci. Padnos. was third, over five lengths behind Given, and Power Chief was next. Golden Enterprise sixth in the betting order tor the Tiratu Maiden. After being well placed from the outset he finished very sliongly. Over the last bit Golden Enterprise drew away and won by nearly two lengths. Tom Tom was half a length further eway and The Treble, Spurting Luck and Dame Flora were in fine next. Slippery Beats Favourite. Passion Fruit, win».er of the Cup, was favourite for Lhe Hartgill HandiJcap, but Slippery beat her into second folace, the margin at th*, finish being half a length. There was a close finish for third money and Old Surrey beat Aiwai by a neck. When tne field had settled down Slippery was in front, followed by Aiwai, Sergia, Conveyer and Mister Quex. Approaching the five Old Surrey and Passion Fruit went up fast and Old Surrey had charge at the three, being attended into the home stretch by Slippery and Passion Fruit, with Conveyer making some play on the outer. Slippery' hau recovered the lead at the distance and he went on to win from the hardridden Passion Fruit by half a length. Old Surrey was over three lengths away third, closely followed by Aiwai and Conveyer. After being well placed to the Btraight, the Waipukurau-owned Royal Pageant went on solidly to wui the juvenile race decisively from the favourite, Footloose, with Lady Melfort and White Lady next, just m front of Valiant Lady and Golden Melody. A close finish was fiovided in ti.e Totaranui Handicap ana the winner was the Gisborne-trained Okawa, with Lustral, last to leave lhe mark, anc Gai Wind in the minor places.
