PLAZA THEATRE

“THE RETURN OF THE SCARLEi PIMPERNEL” “The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel,” an Alexander Korda production screening to-day at the Plaza Theatre makes the renewal of acquaintance with famous Baroness Orczy character as pleasant an experience as any filmgoer could wish. Relating an exciting story with vigour anu suspense, the film brilliantly presents the intrigues, perils and escapes which have made the Pimpernel legend so fascinating and convincing. Barry K. Barnes gives an excellent performance in the title role. Playing the part with individuality, Barnes makes Sir Percy Blakeney a completely credible Pimpernel, outwardly debonair and poppish, but in reality a man of courage and resource. One of the most brilliantly contrived situations in the film brings the villianous Chauvelin, with his head in danger if he fails to capture the Pimpernel, face to face witn his enemy. But so clever in the Pimpernel’s disguise that even his supporters have a momentary doubt whether he really is the man he pretends to be. Excellent supporting performances are contributed by Francis Lister, as the smooth and villainous Chauvelin, by Henry Oscar, as Robespierre, menacing revolutionary dictator, and by Sophie Stewart, as the beautiful Lady Blakeney. There are many clever minor studies, all crisp and clear-cut, from such capable players as Margaretta Scott, Evelyn Roberts and James Mason. The direction of Hans Schwartz has preserved an admirable balance between action, suspense and humour in one of the best costume films seen in Wanganui for many months. A well-chosen celection of supporting items, including the second issue of “March of Time,” a coloured travelogue science* series, completes a very entertaining programme.
