Power and Miss M. Mawhinney. RETURNED SOLDIERS ASSOCIATION’S ANNUAL REPORT Dr. W. T. Simmons presided at the annual meeting of the Patea Returned Soldiers’ Association last Wednesday. The attendance was small but enthusiastic. Apologies were received from Messrs. R. W. Haddow, A. Taylor, L. P. Clark and N. Coad. Members stood in silence as a mark of re* spect to two members who had answered the last roll call—the late Messsrs. T. Rochford and J. Hayward. The president addressed the meeting and expressed pleasure at the sound financial position of the association and large increase in membership. He also commented on the material assistance given to members in distress, this being mainly possible owing to the continued generosity of residents of the district in supporting our various calls for funds. The election of officers resulted:— President, Dr. W. T. Simmons (reelected); vice-presidents, Messrs. R. W. Haddow and G. P. Pettigrew; committee, Messrs. H. Palmer, A. J. Leigh, F. S. McKenna, D. Schwass, J. Prout, A. Langslow, L. P. Clark, A. Taylor, J. Cunningham, N. Coad, A. Railton, A. Carey and H. Parsons; hon. solicitor, Mr. T. E. Roberts; hon. auditor, Mr. G. P. Pettigrew; hon. secretary, Mr. C. S. Marton.

POPPY SALES The sale of poppies in Patea this year resulted in a record, over £44 being taken. The collection at the Anzac service totalled £lO 18s. ANZAC DAY A service was held in St. George's Church yesterday morning by Rev. W. H. Walton, and a beautiful wreath comprising over fifty poppies was laid on the roll of honour by ex-service-men C. S. Martin and C. Hill. In the afternoon the Town Hall was filled to capacity for the Anzac service. The parade included nearly 50 returned soldiers, territorials, guides, scouts and brownies and was headed by the Patea Municipal Band, which played for the hymns at the service. The Mayor, Mr. F. Ramsbottom, presided and addresses were delivered by Capt. W. T. Simmons and Rev. R. Patchett. The final prayer and benediction was given by the Rev. H. B. Burnett and in the procession to the Domain many beautiful wreaths from various organisations were carried to be placed on the memorial gates. The Last Post was played and Reveille sounded. Afterwards the Women’s Institute entertained the returned soldiers, their wives and the band to afternoon tea. PERSONAL Mrs. Wyatt, Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. A. A. Carey. Mr. and Mrs. L. Christiansen, GonVille, Wanganui, recently visited Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Christiansen, who,. after residing for 29 years in Patea, are moving shortly to reside in Wanganui. Miss Amy Kane is staying at the Central Hotel. SCHOOL ANZAC SERVICE Dr. W. T. Simmons, president of the R.S.A., gave the address at the Anzac service at the public school on Friday. Hymns, were sung by the children and the National Anthem closed the service. Dr. Simmons then presented the certificates won during the swimming season as follows:—880yds.: Eva Jenkins, John Baker. 220yds.: Cynthia Fitzwater, Shirley Macken, Dorothy Haddow, Reg. Bruce Glenny, Colin Glenny, Brian Hunter, Don Glenny, Sinclair, Taniwha, Arthur Bates, Morris Jenkins. ANGLICAN SUNDAY SCHOOL 70th ANNIVERSARY A service in the church taken by Rev. W. H. Walton to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the St. George's Sunday School, was held on Saturday and then trees were planted by Mrs. J. G. Beamish, daughter of the first superintendent, Mrs. W. White, a former superintendent. Rev. Walton. Misses Lydia Bond, Pearl and Gladys Kelly, present teachers, and then Mr. E. F. Hemingway gave a short address. The children surrounded the church, called the "Clipping of the Bough" and sang the hymn, “We Love th* 3 Place, O God.” A photograph was taken of the Sunday School children. 1

An adjournment, was made to Ihe Town Hall suppr room for a party tea, which opened with Grace. Rev. Walton expressed regret that. Mrs. Honeyfield, sen., Ngaere Baker, Atholie Roots and Barry Stevens could not be present, owing to illness. He welcomed Mrs. Beamish, Mrs. White and Miss Edna Williams and thanked Mrs. Beamish for attending, also Ihe mothers and teachers. Songs were given by Francis Jones, Gloria Bond and recitations by Sh.’rley Macken and Miss Coulter (Hawera*. Games and eommunity singing led hy Miss Gwen Bond were held and "Auld Lang Syne" concluded the function.
