OHAKEA

OHAKEA AERODROME. Increasing activity is evident to passers-by at the new Defence Department aerodrome now in course of construction at Ohakea. A siding has been constructed to connect with the Manawatu County Council's tramway and there is a considerable amount of reinforcing steel and steel girders to be seen near the point where the hangars are to be built. A large tractor is engaged in moving earth, and an artesian well is being sunk nearby. A considerable number of men are employed.

GENERAL. Further welcome rain has fallen in the district which will supplement that recorded last week. Falls of .03ins., ,05ins., 1.29 ins. were recorded for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and as a result the fields which for months have presented a parched appearance are now beginning to green up. The falls unfortunately come too late to save some dairy herds which have dried off. Sheep-farmers are now faced with an outbreak of eczema which has made its appearance in a few cases. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. Mr. F. O. Bailey (chairman), presided over the monthly meeting of the School Committee, there being present: Messrs. H. Ellery, J. Capstick, L. Sadler and the head teacher. An apology for absence was received from A. H. Hartley.

Correspondence was read from the Education Board declining an application for an asphalt playing area. It was decided to hold the matter over. The head teacher reported that bicycle accommodation had been provided and medical inspection carried out by Dr. Bowden. It was also reported that a further four swimming certificates had been awarded since February, making a total of 14. The secretary presented the bal-ance-sheet, which showed that there was a balance of £62 in hand. Discussion took place on the proposed shifting of the drain past the school, and it was decided to pursue a vigorous course to safeguard the school property. The chairman’s report was read and after amendment it was authorised for presentation at the householders meeting next week. It was decided to extend the concrete paths to the new cycle shed. Votes of thanks were accorded the staff, chairman and secretary for their work during the year.

PERSONAL Mr. and Mrs. B. Henderson have returned from their holiday spent In the South Island. Mrs. J. Capstick has left to spend a holiday in Christchurch. Mr. F. O. Bailey and Mr. H. P. Green have returned after a motor tour of the Thames, Bay of Plenty and Auckland districts. Mrs. C. M. Broughton has been the guest of Mrs. S. W. Ingram for a few days.
