WAIMARINO LABOUR REPRESENTATION COMMITTEE.

The annual meeting of the Waimarino Labour Representation Committee, was held recently in the Majestic Theatre, Ohakune. There was a large attendance of delegates from all parts of the electorate. Mr. J. J. Dooley presided and in the absence of Mr. T. S. Smith, Mr. J. Barton acted as secretary.

The president of the L.R.C. briefly addressed those present, giving an outline of the past year's work, and expressed satisfaction at the number of new branches that had been formed. The good organising work accomplished by all the branches had resulted in a membership that was easily a record for the electorate. He was confident that with the same co-opera-tion and harmony that had existed in the past would this year see Labour poll a record vote. Election of Officers.—The election of officers for the 1938-39 resulted as follows:—President: Mr. J. J. Dooty (Taumarunui). Vice-presidents: Mr. L. V. Carmine (Ohakune), Mr. P. Kearins (Taihape). Secretary: Mr. W. Seator (Taumarunui). Minute secretary: Mr. A. Devereaux (Owhango). Treasurer; Mrs. M. Walker (Taumarunui). Executive: Messrs. Kearins, McLean and Dunn (Taihape); Mrs. Borlase, Messrs. McKenzie, Carmine, Bills (Ohakune); Mr. Harnett (Raetihi), Mr. Verran (Manunui); Mrs. Walker, Messrs. Barton and Dooley (Taumarunui). Delegates to annual conference (Wellington); Mrs. Walker and Mr. Dooley.

The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the ladies of Ohakune for providing supper, and the Ohakune branch for the trouble they had taken to make the meeting such a success.

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. The third annual meeting of the above branch was recently held at Ohakune. The annual report presented stated: Our second birthday which was celebrated with a social and dance proved a huge success both socially and financially. Our halfyearly council which was also held in April proved very beneficial to our members. Members from neighbouring institutes also attended. Owing to the infantile paralysis epidemic our May meeting was postponed. Mrs. Millen visited us and gave a very full account of the aims of the Women’s Institutes and a talk on drama work and gardening. In July our president (Mrs. Carmine) resigned from the chair for three months owing to illhealth; Mrs. Hardie, vice president, proved a valuable substitute. One of our members has started a home nursing circle and this is proving very interesting indeed. Our competitions and demonstrations have covered many subjects; an ollicers’ school was also held. A garden parly held at Mrs. Martin’s residence proved a huge success and from the proceeds we were able to send a sum of money to both the Dominion and Ruapehu Federations. In December Rev. Lane addressed the members and afterwards all joined in with the singing of Christmas carols. At. our February meeting it was decided to hold a children’s party. This party, in spite of the bad weather was well attended and enjoyably spent. Several of our members have been transferred to other centres. Previous to their departure each was presented with a small gift. The annual report was referred to in complimentary terms by several speakers. Tre following members were elected to hold office for the ensuing year: - President, Mrs. Carmine (unopposed); vice-president, Mrs. Hardie; secretary, Mrs. Bergstrom; treasurer, Mrs. Pal-

mer; press correspondent, Miss G. Hammond; committee, Mesdame. Bernie Townsen and E, Clark.
