SANDON

QUEEN CARNIVAL COMMITTEE

An executive meeting of the Queen Carnival committee was held in the Town Hall on Saturday evening, the chairman, Mr. A. K. Drew, presiding. Members of the Sandon Hall Committee were also present. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. Bradley, M. Pearce and Beattie.

Nomination for Queens were received as under: Central, Miss Jean Butler; western, Miss F. Anderson; the eastern nomination will be finalised to-day. A discussion ensued on the suitability of “Carnation," which was one of the names originally selected. It was eventually resolved that the name of “Violet” be substituted. The draw for the names of the various Queen nominees was then proceeded- with and resulted as follows: Central (Miss J. Butler) “Violet,” Western (Miss F. Anderson), “Rose" and Eastern “Daphne.” Colours are to be as follows: “Violet” blue,

“Rose" gold, and “Daphne” pink. It was unanimously resolved that a grand opening night in the form of a social evening and dance be held on April 20, in conjunction with a public meeting to explain the proposals to the public. The various selected queens will be presented to the public that night. It was left in the secretary’s hands to arrange the programme for that night.

Mr. K. Pearce was appointed publicity officer throughout the carnival, and Messrs. Williams and R. Meyer doorkeepers for the opening night. Mr. S. L. Kent was appointed treasurer of the carnival committee.

The position of the various queens will be posted twice a week per medium of three flags which will be flown from the flag pole on the offices of the Manawatu County Council. It was resolved that a secret record be kept of the actual number of votes recorded for each candidate, and that votes be counted on the system of one vote for each penny. Mrs. T. A. Adams kindly offered to secure the flags necessary for advertising the position of candidates. The question of obtaining a permit for the running of a raffle was left in abeyance in the meantime.

Considerable discussion on various other details took place, and it was resolved that the carnival closing date be approximately June 15, 1938. A definite date will be fixed in the near future.
