FRANCO’S TROOPS
HEAVY FIGHTING REPORTED

A message from San Sebastian states that General Franco’s troops are encircling Tremp, 40 miles north of Lerida, and are slowly forging their way towards the sea. The loyalists have ordered the evacuation of Tortosa, and of Vinaroz, and Benicarlo, on the coast to the south, but are reinforcing the neighbouring valleys. Barcelona reports heavy fighting around Sanmateo, 36 miles south-west of Tortosa.
SPOTTED FROM ALOFT INSURGENT SUBMARINE BOMBED AND BELIEVED DESTROYED BARCELONA, April 10. Government aeroplanes spotted a submerged enemy submarine near Almeria and made several low flights, dropping bombs, after which the submarine was not seen. It is believed that it was destroyed.
ATTACKED BY CROWD GROUP IN HYDE PARK Received April 11. 5.5 p.m. LONDON, April 10. A big demonstration in Hyde Park was addressed by Mr. C. R. Attlee, Leader of the Opposition, Sir Stafford Cripps, Mr. Arthur Greenwood, and other speakers. A resolution was passed condemning non-intervention in Spain. The crowd at one meeting charged a smart blonde wearing a swastika. Police formed a cordon and placed the girl and her male escort aboard a 'bus. The crowd attacked a group carrying a swastika flag. Police rescued the group, one of whom suffered a head injury. Mounted and foot police took an hour to clear the crowd.
The Daily Telegraph says that the girl wearing the swastika was the Hon. Unity Freeman-Mitford, daughter of Lord Redesdale.
