HORSE MARKET

WANGANUI FAIR

SATISFACTORY SALE

To an excellent attendance was offered 300 horses of all classes. The sale, although hardly up to our autumn fair of last year, was nevertheless quite satisfactory. The heaviest section was the unbrokens, 150 being yarded and practically the whole lot being sold under the hammer. Mr. Donald Ross’ entry of useful hair to three-quarter-draught fillies made up to £27 10s. Mr. W. J. Polson’s entry was much the same class, selling up to £2B. An unbroken two-year half-draught colt of Mrs. S. M. Hammond, Waverley, made £2O. Good unbroken hacks were keenly bid for, Messrs. Glenn Bros.’ entry making up to £2l 10s, whilst Mr. A. E. Samway's, of Hihitahi, realised up to £2l. Anything showing quality and size in the unbroken section sold well but weedy sorts were not wanted and sold at low figures.

In the broken-in section, prices were down considerably on spring sales. Most farmers will have little work for horses until the spring and the sale was a dull one, bidding being very slow and restrained. Good young draught mares sold fairly well, top prices being obtained by South Island vendors at £44 10s and £47 10s. Spring carter made fair values but anything lighter than this class were hard to sell. The broken hacks were a poor lot with only an odd one realising double figures. Unbroken Section.—Three-quarter draught fillies, £2B, £35; half-draught, £lB, £27 10s; spring carters, £l2, £18; good hacks, to £2l 10s; average, £l2, £l5; poor hacks, £2 10s, £5; brood mares, aged, £l, £5.

Draughts (broken).—Young draught mares, £35, £47 10s; ditto, geldings. £32 10s, £43; good three-quarter to half-draughts, £2B, £32; aged, £l5, £22 10s; good spring carters, £lB, £23; fair, £l4, £l7; light horses, £6, £10; aged, £2 10s, £5 10s.

Hacks (broken).—Fair hacks, up to six years, £l2, £l4; aged, £7, £10; inferior and ill-bred, £1 10s, £4.
