MARTON JUNCTION SCHOOL

MEETING OF COMMITTEE

The last meeting of the Marton Junction School Committee before the householders’ meeting to-morrow night was held last week. Mr. E. G. Friedrich presided over Messrs. H. C. Gronn, J. Miscall, W. Bone, J. Mainwaring (secretary), and the headmaster, Mr. F. A. Hempieman. As this was the last meeting, the chairman thanked members for their co-operation during the past two years and expressed a hope that the same support would be accorded the incoming committee.

Mr. Hempieman reported that the swimming campaign was a great success, 40 pupils learning to swim under teachers’ guidance during 1938. Sixtytwo pupils out of 117 in the standard classes can now swim. Thirty-seven certificates awarded by the New Zealand Amateur .Swimming Association [are to be issued for distances of 50 [yards to half a mile. A number of I pupils can swim shorter distances, to [whom certificates are to be awarded. The school was fortunate in retaining the Vile Shield at Bulls and the Peace Shield at the Rangitikei School sports. Vivian Stantiall won the medal as the champion boy, while Mervyn Whale was runner-up.

The roll stands at 170. Parents are reminded to attend the householders’ meeting to-morrow night. BOWLING TOURNEY AT PALMERSTON NORTH During the week-end four rinks from Marton Bowling Club visited Terrace End, Palmerston North, to compete in a one-day tourney. The rink consisting of W. Hamer (skip), S. Goebel, R. McKenzie and R. Bland was successful in winning the tourney with four wins (the number of games played) and were presented with four miniature cups donated by Mr. L. G. West, architect. Rinks from Pahiatua, Woodville, Feilding, Wanganui, Marton and Palmerston North Clubs competed.

MARTON JUNIOR BRANCH

The Marton junior branch of the New Zealand National Party will hold a social evening in the Marton Jockey Club's rooms at 8 o’clock this (Tuesday) evening. All interested are cordially invited.

PERSONAL The Most Rev. J. W. C. Wand, Archbishop of Brisbane, is to visit New Zealand shortly and will conduct a retreat for clergy at Nga TaWa School, Marton, early in May.

Mrs. W. Stevens, Marton, has been appointed an advisory member of the W.D.F.U. for the Wellington province. Mrs. Noel Rix-Trott, Marton, left for New Plymouth on Saturday to spend a holiday with her sister, Miss Nonnie Griffiths.

A youth, W. Keedwell, residing at Robert Street, Marton, had rather an unhappy end to a mushroom excursion yesterday. Homeward bound on a bicycle on Pukepapa Road, he fell and fractured an elbow. He was attended by Dr. T. G. Harpur, and later conveyed to the Wanganui Public Hospital.

Mrs. C. F. Richardson and her daughter Merle, who have been staying with Mrs. H. H. Richardson, Bond Street, Marton, have returned to “Apa Rang!,’’ Wangaehu. Merle is now recovering from her recent illness.

HAWKESTO.NE LADIES’ GOLF CLUB The club opened the season on April 5, when there was a good attendance of members and a very enjoyable sealed orders match was played in glorious weather. At the close of the day Mrs Hempieman, the ladies’ president, on behalf of the members, presented to Miss Lorrimei a small gift in recognition of her valuable work as secretary during the past season.
