NEW ELECTORAL DISTRICTS

THE CHANGED BOUNDARIES WANGANUI DIRECTLY AFFECTED 1 OVER 2000 ADDITIONAL. NAMES I Alterations of the boundaries of ; various electorates throughout the ; Dominion will result in a great, deal ( ol work to compile new rolls. ’.Van ( ganui has a direct interest in thr matter in I hat the Wanganui East portion of the city is to come out of the Rangitikei electorate and be included in Wanganui. The matter is <>■ import from a district point of vie.'-' also in that part of the abolished Oroua electorate, and also parts oi the old Manawatu electorate, have been merged witii Rangitikei. There is an important alteration in the northern portion of the Rangitikei electorate also, in that Taihape borough has been taken out and merged with Waimarino. What the Map Reveals. It is interesting to look at a map of the Rangitikei and Wanganui eieci torates. So far as Wanganui is concerned the general boundary follows I the No. 1 Line to the Town Bridge, i Putiki, the Airport area and Duric Hill, all lying in Rangitikei. The boundary continues on from the Town Bridge along the No. 3 Line towards Wanganui East, all those people residing in Dune Vaie, on Bastia Hill and tound the foot of the hili beyond Shakespeare Cliff being in Rangitikei. Mr Hope Gibbons’ residence, for instance, is in the Rangitikei electorate. The people living in Wairere Road, Georgetti Road, Mount View Road and the sections fronting Turoa Road are in Rangitikei. Anzai: ! Parade, from its junction with No. o I Line, is in Wanganui. Likewise, Sedgebrook and Willis Streets. '1 he boundary, after turning off the No. 3 Line into Turoa Road follows the latter to its dead end, then comes back again down the other side before heading out towards the railway line. Certain sections before reaching the No. 3 Line, before reaching the railway line going outward from the city, are in Wanganui, but those sections on the right immediately alter crossing the line are in Rangitikei. The boundary ceases to follow the No. 3 Line immediately after it crosses the railway, and goes round the back of several town sections towards the river again, having the effect of placing most of the residents in No. 3 Line on the same side as the metal pit, and those on the oppiste side, in Rangitikei. East Town Road, however, comes into Wanganui, and most of that area lying behind it in towards the hills, the boundary striking across country to reach the river a block above Brunswick Street.

After crossing the river it turns sharp and runs outward along Somme Parade, having the effect of putting the river, and that side of it which includes the Paul Estate, into Rangitikei, but leaving the whole of Upper Aramoho in Wanganui. Madras Street, and the block above it, is in Wanganui, but the block above that again is in Patea. The Taihape District. The Rangitikei boundary then follows the Wanganui River to midway between Jerusalem and Pipiriki. On the left bank lies Rangitikei, on the right bank Patea. Jerusalem is in Rangitikei, Putiki is in Waimarino, the boundary between those districts cutting across country from the river, back towards a point on the Main Trunk Railway above Hihitah: and south of the Ngamatea swamp. Hihitahi is still in Rangitikei. Rangiwea and the country out towards Bell's Junction is now in Waimarino. After reaching the Main Trunk line the boundary runs south to below Taihape, all that country on the left of the line coming down being in Waimarino and that on the right in Rangitikei. The whole of the borough of Taihape, however, is in Waimarino. Winiata, just south of laihape, is in Rangitikei. The boundary then heads out towards the ranges, and the Rangitikei electorate will thus take in Hangiwahia and away north, with the Ruahine ranges as a boundary. The electorate takes ir. Kimbolton, Cheltenham, Waituna West, and Rewa and comes back to the Rangitikei River at a point midway between Silverhope and Rata. It then follows the river down to the sea, taking in Bulls, but missing Haicombe, Stanway and Cunninghams , which are in Manawatu. Hunterville, Ohingaiti and Mangaweka, which were in the Old Oroua electorate, have thus been brought into Rangitikei. Busy Time for Registrars. Changes in boundaries lias called for heavy work on the part of registrars of electors. Mr J. H. Dashwood, Marton, registrar for Rangitikei, has completed the transfer to Wanganui of 2214 electors residing in Wanganui East. Close co-operation is taking

place between Mr Dashwood and the registrar of electors, Wanganui (Mr A. D. Dobbie). Cards relating to the names transferred have been forwarded to Wanganui and the electors ale being notified by post. The same applies in the transfer ot Taihape electors to Waimarino. But tlie onus of becoming enrolled lies primarily with the electors themselves. And it would he as well to note that enrolment is compulsory, any person being eligible to register tailing to do so, becoming liable to a line of os for a first offence and tl for any subsequent offence. Similar penalties are provided for failure to advise the registrar of change of address.
