“THIS MARCHING BUSINESS”
WHERE IS IT GOING TO END? FARMERS’ CHAIRMAN PERTURBED “Where are we marching Io and jwhat will the end be?” asked Mr. D. 'Sutherland, chairman of the Fordell branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ 'Union, at the annual meeting on Mon!day night. ‘‘There is marching going lon everywhere. In 1936 Hitler marched into the Rhineland; in 1937 Japan marched into China; in 1938 Hitler marched into Austria. To-day New Zealand is marching into sociallion. Where will it all end?” Dr. Dalton, a supporter of the present Government, had termed the legislation experimental, Mr. Sutherland said. “Socialism is a direct attack on the individual,” the a'.:■ added. ‘‘The State’s duty is to protect the individual, not to (i:\Jroy him. The net increase in Government services, leaving out the reKoration oi salary cuts, has been four and r. half millions. Over 2000 cases of fraud have been discovered in connection with obtaining sustenance payments. All these claims ultimately fall on the land. The Farmers’ Union is not a I political machine, but it should oppose| this drastic marching.”
