HARBOUR LOAN WORKS

REPORT BY CONSULTING ENGINEER At yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Harbour Board the resident consulting engineer (Mr. R. R. Dawson) reported cn the loan works the board has in progress. “The total amount of shell rock supplied from the quarries is 34,242 tons, of which 17,540 tons was obtained under W. R. Rope's contract and the balance (16,702 tons) by the board,” Mr. Dawson stated. “Approximately 5432 tons of concrete blocks have been placed in the moles and 380 tons have been made ready for transport. Shingle to the extent of 800 cubic yards has been obtained from the river by the bucket dredge and the making of concrete blocks is being continued. “Owing to the necessity of overhauling the locomotive the supply of shell rock for the holes has been suspended for the past fortnight. However, some 300 tons of small rock has been placed on the river training walls. “It is anticipated that without any undue interruptions the moles will be completed in June, and that approximately a further 1800 tons of concrete blocks and 2000 tons of shell rock will be required. “The foreshore on the South Beach has built up considerably and the break in the South Spit is becoming more secure. In this connection it is desirable that fences be made as soon as possible to arrest the sand."
