WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

KAI IWI INSTITUTE. The annual meeting of the Kai Iwi Women’s Insittute was held on March 10, when as well as members present there were visitors from the Aramoho W.1., and Mrs. Brine, V.O. Posies made by Mrs. Bruntlett were presented to Mrs. Goldsbury, president, Mrs. Wilton, treasurer, who is resigning, and Miss Bessie Wilson, secretary. On behalf of members Mrs. Bruntlett thanked them for their services during the past year. A gift also was given to the secretary, who is resigning from office. The annual report was read and the financial statement presented, both being adopted. Mrs. Brine spoke on institute committees and appealed to members to consider nomination for the committee. At the conclusion of her speech she was presented with a bouquet. Only six nominations had been received by the secretary, but five members consented to be nominated at the meeting, making up a full committee. Mrs. Goldsbury was reelected president in an enthusiastic manner. Mrs. Flintoff then sang delightfully, after which afternoon tea was served. The visitors kindly judged the competitions and awarded places as follows:—Vase of flowers, Mrs. Goldsbury 1. Mrs. Bruntlett 2 and Mrs. Rountree 3. Jar of preserved fruit: Mrs. Goldsbury 1,, Mrs. Wilton 2, and Mrs. Capon 3. Prizes were presented by Mrs. Brine to the winners of the points competition for the year, Mrs. Burns receiving first prize with 46 points, and Mrs. Bruntlett second with 33 points. The consolation prize for the most consistent competitor went to Mrs. Wilton. Competitions for April: (1) Bottled tomatoes and mustard pickle; (2) vase of yellow and brown flowers. Hostesses for April: Mesdames Capon, Wills, Hocken and Wilton. W.D.F.U. TAIHAPE BRANCH. PRESENTATION TO SECRETARY. In recognition and appreciation of hei services as secretary during the past five years, the Taihape branch of the W.D.F.U. presented Mrs. H. Jensen with a crystal rose bowl at the annual meeting on Wednesday afternoon. In making the presentation, the president, Mrs. C. E. Laidlay, referred to the conscientious, efficient, and painstaking manner in which Mrs. Jensen had carried out her secretarial duties, and wished her a very pleasant trip to Australia. Mrs. Laidlay added that the branch could not allow Mrs. Jensen to depart without giving practical expression to their high appreciation of her untiring efforts. Mrs. F. Howie spoke in a similar strain. In responding, Mrs. Jensen said that she had enjoyed the work, and wished the division every success. She was grateful for the loyal support that she had always received from the committee and members of the branch. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE DANCE SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. There was a large crowd of dancers at the Scot’s Hall, Hunterville, on Thursday night, when the dance promoted by the Hunterville Women’s Institute opened the 1938 dancing season in Hunterville. To the music supplied by Messrs. Gus Large (piano), V. Christensen and H. Towers (pianoaccordions), P. Horn and C. Hughes (saxaphone), the couples danced until an early hour. Messrs. R. Baker and R. Gordon as M.’sC., keeping the programme going with a swing. A delicate supper was dispensed by members of the institute under the direction of Mrs. R. A. Gordon (president). During the evening several competition dances were held and resulted as follows: Spot waltz, Mrs. W. Wright and Mr. W. Hartley; Monte Carlo, Mrs. R. F. Baker and V. Christensen. A competition vas finalised, the winner being Mr. J. Klue. During the evening music for extra dances was played by Mr. G. Large, Mr. P. Holford, and Mr. T. N. Moon. For non-dancers a euchre tournament was held, four tables being in play, and the winners being Mrs. M. Abel and Mr. B. Watkins, junr. COMING-OF-AGE PARTY MR A. H. PENBERTHY I Friends of Mr A. H. Penberthy, ol ! Wanganui, gathered at his home on . Saturday evening, where they celebrated his twenty-first birthday with a most satisfying tea. His mother, Mrs A. Penberthy, made a splendid hostess, and under her care all went well. In proposing his son’s toast, Mr A. Penberthy wished him years of health and happiness. The guest of honour I duly responded, thanking those pres- | ent for their attendance. Mr J. Alexander, toasting the hostess, Mrs A. Penberthy, said that it was due to her efforts that the tea had been such a success. Mrs Penberthy responded in suitable fashion. A key of considerable dimensions was presented to Mr A. H.
