SEAFIELD CLUB OPENING DAY HELD ATTENDANCE OF VISITORS The’ Seafield Club opened its season on Saturday, when there was a large attendance of both the men’s and ladies’ clubs, and a number of visitors. Mixed Canadian foursomes were played over 12 holes. The course was in excellent order and, playing conditions being favourable, a pleasant afternoon was enjoyed by all the golfers. During the afternoon the vice-presi-dent. Mr R. D. Smart, in the unavoidable absence of the president, Mr R. E. Cuthbertson, welcomed the visitors and members. Mr Smart remarekd that the large attendance formed a good augury for a prosperous season. He then called on Mrs Mewburn, president of the ladies’ club, to present the prizes for summer competitions, the winners 01 which were: Young trophy, L. Windle; Manley trophy, S. I. Pritchard. Mrs Mewburn also presented the prizes for the day’s play, which were donated by Messrs Smart .and Pritchard, and were won by Miss Palmer and L. Windle. Mr Bassett-Smith (Castlecliff) and Mr J. Saltinstall (Tawhero), on behalf of the visitors, thanked the Seafield Club for its hospitality. The leading scores for the afternoon were:— L. Windle and Miss Palmer, 63 23—42. S. Mackay and Miss Townsend, 64-34- 50. WANGANUI CLUB NEW SEASON OPENEO. CANADIAN MIXED FOURSOMES. With a large attendance of members and friends, including visitors from other clubs, the Wanganui Golf Club opened their 1938 season at the Belmont links in fine weather on Saturday. The course was very fast, as was to be expected after the recent spell of fine weather, and the greens proved very tricky. In a short speech the president, Dr. F. C. Hutchison, extended a welcome to members and visitors and declared the season open. The first official act of the new season was performed by Miss Montgomery Moore, president of the Wanganui Ladies’ Golf Club, who drove a perfect ball down the first fairway in approved style, this stroke being loudly applauded.

A Canadian mixed foursomes match was played, the handicaps being threeeighths of the combined handicaps. The match was played against the men’s bogey, the ladies driving from the ladies’ tecs and the men from the men’s tees. The winners proved to be Oldham and Mrs. Coghill, who finished 6 up.
