“A MERE GUESS”

REPLY TO MR. SAVAGE FREEDOM ASSOCIATION Commenting on the Prime Minister’s statements regarding the Auckland Provincial Freedom Association, states the New Zealand Herald of December 23, Professor R. M. Algie, organiser of the association, said:— “All statements made to the public on behalf of the Auckland Provincial Freedom Association will, I hope, be characterised on all occasions by fairness, by accuracy, and by a scrupulous regard for the truth,” said Professor Algie. “It would be quite easy at any time to drop to the level of cheap criticism, but the members of the public have a right Io something better than that. Glib references to ‘brain trusts’ are worn threadbare by constant repetition. “The Prime Minister does not, in fact, now who are the supporters of ! the new association and, in his statements to the public, he ought not to substitute a mere guess for positive knowledge. He is just as far from the mark when he purports to state what the objects of the association are. Those objects were clearly and fully set forth in our manifesto published throughout the Dominion a week ago. Nowhere in such manifesto is there any hint of a wish to see mages reduced or living standards made worse.
