CARRIAGE OF SHEEP

ACCOMMODATION ON PAKURA MORE EAST COAST SHIPMENTS NAPIER, Doc. 21. In order to have her ’tween-decks fitted for the carriage of sheep the Richardson Company's coastal vessel Pakura has left Napier for Auckland. When the work has been completed accommodation will be provided for the transport of about 2500 sheep m one load. During the next three months the vessel will make up to 40 trips mainly along the East Coast. The large sales of back country ewes and wethers from the coastal stations to the Waikato and Bay of Plenty districts were originally carried out by means of droving the sheep overland—a long trek that in the majority of cases resulted in loss of condition and the expenditure of considerable time. Recently, however, the practice has been growing to have the sheep shipped from Gisborne, Tolaga Bay, Tokomaru Bay, Hick’s Bay, and the smaller coastal ports to Tauranga, resulting in a great saving of time. Some of the sheep are taken to Auckland but the majority find their way 1o Tauranga. Last year one vessel alone carried between 70,000 and 80,000 sheep to i Tauranga and Auckland, and ii is anticipated that this number -. O be I increased next year.
