HUNTERVILLE

PLUNKET SOCIETY MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Hunterville branch of the Plunket Society was held recently. Those present were Mesdames Weston, Hogg, W. Wilson, Butement. D. D. Simpson, Grant Simpson, J. Bull, Thompson and Miss Hourigan. Mrs. Bull presided. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Pitcaithly, Jackson, Lambert and Dr. J. Burnett. The nurses’ report for October read as follows: New cases 1, visits to homes 14. Visits to rooms, adults 47, babies 37, children 8. Telephone calls 7. Whareora Hospital was visited. Health of mothers and babies is good. Miss Hourigan reported that arrangements for the garden party to be held at the hospital on December 4, to help the Makogai Leper Settlement, are well in hand. In connection with the need of the branch for new scales, it was reported that the Taihape branch having replaced their scales weighing up to lOlbs. by those weighing children up to five years, had offered their old scales to Hunterville, their subbranch, as a gift. It was pointed out that Plunket scales are costly, anything from £l5 to £2O being a fair price, and that as the scales which had been given the branch were of a very high order and delicate workmanship, the thanks of the branch and the mothers of Hunterville are due to the Taihape branch for its generous gift which, arrived newly tested and ready for use. Members’ subscriptions were received from Mesdames Craig, Wilson, 2hilp, Galpin, and Mclntosh. TENNIS A number of local tennis players visited Bulls last Saturday, to contest in a tournament which had been postponed from Labour Day. Miss McDonald and Mr. I. Rhodes were the only players to make their presmce felt, being runners-up in the handicap doubles. HUNTER VILLE SWIMMING CLUB COMMITTEE MEETING A meeting of the committee of the Swimming Club was held last week, |the main being to appoint officials fox racing events. Mr. J. Bull presided, also being present Messrs. A. J. Fetrie, A. Chisholm, I. Lynch, R. J. Jamieson, R. Nicnolson, J. E. Biggar, J. Nairn, R. M. S. Jones, and W. G. O’Brien (hon. sec.). It was moved by Mr. Lynch, and seconded by Mr. Jamieson, that the >fficial opening be held on Wednesday, December 1, at 8 p.m. An amendment that the opening be held on the same date, but at 7 p.m., was moved by Messrs. Jones and Biggar, and was carried. Carnival officials for the year were elected as follows: Timekeepers, Messrs. J. Bull, J. Nairn, and J. E. Biggar; announcer, Mr. R. A. Gordon; starter, Mr. P. D. J. Smith; check starter, Mr. C. D. Barford; judges, Messrs. A. J. Pealrie, R. M. S. Jones, and Dr. L. M. Burnett; handicapper, Dr. Burnett; call steward, Mr. R. Gordon; costume steward, Mr. W. G. O'Brien; recording steward, Mr. vV. A. H. Williams. Messrs. Bull and Petrie moved that the secretary draw up a programme lor tne opening night. The secretary was authorised to obtain three stop watches to the value of £3 15s. A vote of thanks was accorded Mr. W. R. Duncan, for a donation towards the trophy fund. On the motion of Mr. Lynch, seconded by Mr. Jones, the question oi awarding trophies was. referred until another meeting of the committee. It was decided that the club fall in line with the other clubs of the Dominion and join in the “Learn to Swim” Week, which will be held in

[December. After some discussion, Mr. Biggar moved that Miss P. Jones | and Mr. Lynch act as legation officers I of the club, with the school commiti tee. This was seconded by the chairman, and carried. I Accounts totalling £2 6s 4d were ! passed for payment. SECONDARY SCHOOL BUS COMMENCES RUNNING TO-DAY The ’bus to carry secondary pupils from Hunterville and districts between Hunterville and Marton to the Marton District High School, commences to-day. This ’bus will be stationed at Hunterville and will commence its 1 run at 7.40 a.m. from the Bruce and Milne Street intersection. On reach- ■ ing Rata the children will transfer to another ’bus and the first ’bus return to Hunterville with primary pupils. This arrangement for secondary pupils will be a more satisfactory one than they have had to use as the bus will leave later than the train, and the return trip can be made as soon as school finishes, getting the pupils home at a reasonable time. PERSONAL Mr. L. R. Taylor, who for some time has been a member of the local . telephone exchange staff, has been • promoted to a position in the accounts department, Wellington. Mr. E. J. Irwin, of the local post . office staff, has received notice of his transfer to Kawakawa, and leaves > shortly to commence duty. He will ; be replaced by Mr. Tucker, of Carterr ton. A large contingent of friends called . on Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Gordon on Saturday evening, on the occasion of the silver anniversary of their wedding. Members of the Women’s Institute, of the fire brigade, and many others were present to spend an en- , joy able evening, and extend to Mr. . and Mrs. Gordon best wishes. The L honoured couple were the recipients ; of many handsome gifts from their > friends.
