LEVIN MEETING

GOOD FIELDS ENGAGED

HANDICAP AND HACK CUP,

REVIEW OF PROSPECTS With the Feilding, Woodville and Otaki meetings to follow, the Levin Racing Club’s annual fixture today should attract a good deal of interest, especially as the majority of -trese engaged will later be seen in action on the circuit. It generally provides a good opportunity for three-year-olds ot class to advance their preparation for important classic events, and one instance was provided last year when Essex won the Lake Hack Cup and went on to Ellerslie to win the Great Northern Derby. The totalisator at Levin is operated on the single-pool system, with dividends in the respective proportions of 75 and 25 per cent, for first and second placings. The track has always been found very fast, and even after the recent beneficial rains it should furnish excellent going. The first race is to start at 12 noon, and as Levin is only a little over 60 miles from Wanganui there should be a large representation of district followers of form at the meeting to-day. In a large field for the Maiden Race the form of Sigurd, Ruling Spi, Alloa, Conversion, Rangemoie, Irish Orders, Laughing Chief and Gaystep must attract attention to their chances. Twilight Song and Gabriel will be absentees.

Southern Blood has rapidly worked his way to the head of the handicap in the Manakau Hack Hurdles, but he should be able to hold off the opposition, although Even Money is overdue and King’s Lancer is held to be a very promising recruit, though slow at the obstacles. Lower down the list is Auroa’s Love, a daughter of that versatile mare Aurora Borealis. Windward and Free Gold will not be starters in the Weraroa Hack Handicap and Taro is reported a likely absentee. Diamond Cutter has earned his place at the head of the list, and consistant performances by Gironde, Royal Romance, Lustral, Lady Hoariri, Royal Choice snd Itaroa suggest that they will be in demand.

It is to be regretted that the Levin Handicap Held numbers the bare halfdozen, and the club may find it a better policy to offer again such a trophy as the Levin Cup, the last race for which was won by Talisksr. Considering the class engaged, The Buzzer cannot be held overweighted at 9.U, for last season he won the Tair.stete Handicap (a mile and a-quarter) at Awapuni, carrying 7.13. lie defeated a really good field of performers on that occasion, and since commencing this season he has had two Unplaced performances over sprint distances, so too much notice need not be taken of his defeats. He has been accorded a nomination for the Auckland Cup and he should expect to play a prominent part m early

engagements. Helen Jord stays on well and for that reason must be liked over 10 furlongs, at which distance she finished third at Masterton recently, and on the second day was actually in front of Cuddle, Shy and Mister Quex. The last-named, who is in receipt of 81b. from Helen Ford, was recently third behind Kinnoull and Catalogue at Trentham, so on that form he should be in the picture to-day. Terry was third in this race last year, and she may be found racing better at Levin than anywhere

else. Myriam may not be suited by the Levin track, and Grand Jury appears to be a spent light. Backers will no doubt declare for The Buzzer. The hack sprinters have the Mako Mako Hack Handicap to themselves, and Golden Chest, Great Hope, Diamond Cutter and Captain Treville may be well supported. An excellent held is engaged in the Lake Hack Cup, with Windward an absentee and Cricket also not likely to take part, leaving ten or eleven likely starters. Malibu and Chat have won nicely in recent engagements, and Tidewaiter is preferred in some quarters. Sunny Blonde’s win at Riccarton suggests that she should be considered dangerous here and Warehi’s consistent form draws attention to his chances. Good Sun, Lady Hoariri (impressive at Bulls) and Galteemore also read well. Ten is the main for the McDonald Memorial, and backers’ fancies will cover a fairly wide range. Last year’s

winner, Lone Raider, may put up another of his brilliant performances. Mittie won decisively at Otaki last month and that will be a factor with bettors, especially as she was also a winner at Riccarton. Wildflower will be making her first appearance in open class and as she won so well among the hacks at Marton and Otaki she should not be friendless, though she would be preferred over a six-furlong course. Airing, winner of sprint events at New Plymouth and Waverley, will be forgiven his Bulls defeat and must be dangerous. Both Mister Quex and Myriam claim earlier engagements. For the five-furlong Hokio Hack Handicap, with which the day’s racing concludes, there may be some defections, but Golden Chest, Geira, Captain Treville, Lady Hoariri (if reserved), Sporting Gift, Cloak and Conversion may be in the market. Following are selections in the respective events that may be preferred by investors:— Maiden Race.—Laughing Chief, Conversion, Sigurd. Manakau Hack Hurdles.—Southern Blood, King's Lancer, Even Money. Weraroa Hack Handicap.—Gironde, Diamond Cutter, Royal Romance. Levin Handicap.—The Buzzer, Mister Quex.
