THE WELLINGTON BRANCH ANNUAL CONFERENCE HELD (From Our Own Correspondent) PALMERSTON N., Nov. 19. The annual conference of the Wellington District Branch of the New Zealand Institute of County Clerks was held to-day at the offices of theKairanga County Council, Palmerston North. The president, Mr H. H. Richardson, presided, and the following members were present: A. K. Drew (Manawatu), F. H. Hudson (Horowhenua), J. C. D. Mackley (Masterton), G. Darbyshire (Wanganui), D. L. Crooks (Dannevirke), W. L. Hesseitine (Kiwitea), E. T. Beaven (Wairarapa South), J. Hutton (Pahiatua), N. I. Nielsen (Kairanga), A. E. Orgias (Pohangina), and the following Associate members: S. L. Orr (Mana- ; watu), S. L. Kent (Manawatu), A. V. j Brown (Rangitikei), R. McKenzie I (Rangitikei), O. Grant (Featherston), ; L. L. Jones (Rangitikei), R. E. Barnes (Masterton), J. H. Sutherland (Dannevirke), G. L. Challis (Masterton), W. Broadhead (Waitotara). Members from other branches present were: J. W. Harding (Hawera), F. W. Holt (Waipawa), A. Mabbott (Waimarino), F. Holt (Waipawa), and W. S. K. Drew (Cheviot). Apologies were received from: H. R. Robinson (Hutt), iE. W. Eunson (Akitio), H. Hardinge I (Featherston), W. N. Richardson • (Eketahuna), C. Campbell (Strat- ■ ford), R. B. Price (Waipukurau), G. J. Broker (Patea), W. J. O’Connell (Hawke’s Bay), J. W. Elliott (Pataugata), K. E. Power (Masterton), A. |J. Graham (Woodville), and F. L. Nicoll (Rangitikei). Following the president’s address and election of officers for the ensuing >ear, an associate member, Mr S. L. Orr (Manawatu) was appointed chairman for the balance of the conference, this being a departure from the usual practice. An interesting paper dealing with the various industrial awards affecting county councils was presented by Messrs A. V. Brown (Rangitikei), S. | L. Orr (Manawatu) and K. E. Power (Master ton). Mr A. V. Brown brought down a paper dealing with the recent amendment to the Local Elections and Polls Act, 1936, which was of considerable interest to mem 1 • bers. I The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr H. Richardson; vice-presi-dent, Mr A. K. Drew; secretary ano treasurer, Mr J. C. D. Mackley; auditor, Mr J. Hutton; executive, Messrs F. H. Hudson, N. I. Nielsen and J. Hutton; representative on the New Zealand Institute, Mr H. H. Richardson. During the conference the president, Mr H. H. Richardson, mentioned that Mr W. S. K. Drew, who was previously an associate member of the branch, had recently been promoted 1o the position of county clerk to the Cheviot County Council, the speaker congratulated him on his appointment and wished him every success. Mr Richardson also that the appointment was probably unique as his father, Mr A. K. Drew, was the well-known county clerk of the Manawatu County Council.
