DRINK AMONG MAORIS
ARCHDEACON’S REMARKS [ Per Press Association. ) HAMILTON, Nov. 18. “The drink problem is one that is ever present among our people. I know that the law does not permit liquor to be supplied to Maoris off licensed premises, but yet it gets among them,” remarked Archdeacon W. Raiti, of Ngaruawahia, when speaking of the work of the Maori Mission at the final celebrations in connection with the inauguration of the new Claudelands parish. He said that he did not know how the Maoris obtained the liquor, but it was his opinion that pakehas were behind it. “I don’t know how this menace to our people can be wiped out, but I can only hope that the law will be amended in order to remove the present evil. It is tragic to see little children growing up whose parents have been affected by this menace.”
