OBITUARY

MRS. EMILY MELLSOP FORMER PRINCIPAL AT GIRLS’ COLLEGE [ Per Press Association. 1 ROTORUA, Nov. 17. The death has occurred of Mrs. Emily Mellsop, relict of the late Harold Crisp Mellsop, proprietor of Brent’s Bathgate House from 1923 to 1928, who predeceased her about eight years ago. The late Mrs. Mellsop was born in Australia and came to New Zealand at an early age with her parents, who took up farming in the Auckland district. She was one of the first women in the Dominion to secure the Master of Arts degree and subsequently was lady principal of the Nelson Girls’ College and Wanganui Girls’ College; leaving the latter position about 40 years ago to marry the late Mr. Mellsop. Even after her retirement from the teaching profession she still continued to act as examiner for several girls’ colleges. Mrs. Mellsop took a keen interest in golf and for a period was secretary of the Manawatu Ladies’ Golf Club and for fifteen years secretary of the N.Z. Ladies’ Golf Union. She continued this interest on settling in Rotorua and in 1936 was made the first life member of the Rotorua Ladies’ Golf Club. MR G. ROWSON, M.P. Mr Guy Rowson was born at Manchester in 1883, and was a member of the Lancashire County Council in 1919-25, and member of the Tyldesley Union District Council in 1919-22. He was miners’ agent for the Lancashire and Chesire Miners’ Federation, ana was elected to the House of Commons in 1929, was defeated in 1931, h”t regained t u ? seat in 1935.
