The chairman’s monthly report was as follows: “I have to report that in company with the secretary, architect and senior inspector, I visited Waitotara on Monday last for the purpose of officially handing over the new school to the school committee. There was a large attendance of parents, settlers and ex-pupils, a number of whom had travelled long distances to be present so that the function was something in the nature of a reunion as well. Addresses were given by Mr. Belton, chairman of the Patea County Council, and Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., after which I also addressed the gathering and handed over the building to the committee. At my request, Mr. Dickie officially declared the building open. The function was a most successful one in every way. “The Foxton School Committee invited me to attend a function on Tuesday last and unveil a photograph of the late Mr. J. K. Hornblow. Unfortunately I was not able to be present and asked Mr. Oram as deputy chairman, to represent me. My thanks are tendered to him for his able assistance. Messrs. Batchelar and Mudford, Colonel Whyte and the secretary also attended the function to represent the board. I am indebted also to Mr. Munro who, in company with the secretary, represented the board at a function in Raurimu to mark the opening of the new additions necessitated by consolidation.” A grant of £2O was made to the committee of the Mosston School toward the cost of asphalting. A request that the board should review its decision regarding the opening of primary schools on Mondays after term ~ju. from the Marton branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute. The secretary pointed out that if this wercdone it would be necessary to take away the days granted to school committees for extra holidays in older to keep to the required 400 half days. It was decided to advise the branch that the board would not alter its decision. An application was received from the committee of the Taihape School for the installation of a telephone at the school. The board decided to decline the request on the grounds that a precedent would be created. Several schools had telephones now that these were paid for by the committees out of their own funds. The committee of the Wanganui East School renewed its application for improvements to the wooden building to enable it to be used as an infant department. The Education Department notified that a grant had been agreed to for improvements and renovations to the Pamoana Native School and residence. The department also notified the reinstatement of a subsidy at the rate of £2 for £1 raised locally for the erection of dental clinics. A request was received from the committee of the Karioi School for the calling of a meeting to permit members of the board to address parents on the question of consolidation.
