LAWN TENNIS

NOTES AND COMMENTS WANGANUI EAST CLUB.

(By

A. N. Campbell.)

Wanganui East Club, over the last week, and in pursuing its policy of arranging friendly matches with county and neighbouring clubs, fulfilled four engagements, thus enabling 50 of its members to participate in matches. On Saturday a team from Westmere played on the home courts, while another team visited Okoia. On Sunday A. H. Rhodes led a Rata invasion, while B. Jones took a Wanganui East team to Gonville. The president, Mr. G. H. Williamson, carried out the arrangements with Westmere, and the social arrangements were left in the hands of Mrs. J. Johnstone. This comig week-end is to be specially devoted to match play in the first round of the club's handicap events, and all members are requested to be at the courts early to facilitate the work of the match committee, which will be heavy in view of the very strong entries in all sections.

The Wellington Lawn Tennis Association has a moving picture film taken dealing with footfaulting and it is its intention to hire it out to associations and clubs for screening purposes. The film shows “posed” footfaults and footfaults of playehs in Wellington committing breaches of the service rules and being unaware they were being shot. It would be a great idea for the Wanganui L.T.A. to hire the film and in a covering letter Mr. A. Symes suggests the formation of an umpires association and he is agreeable to visit Wanganui for that purpose. This would be an excellent arrangement and when the W.L.T.A. discusses the matter at its next meeting I hope the management committee will be unanimous in its decision to form such a body and to hire this interesting film. (These notes have unavoidably been held over from yesterday’s issue).
