CARNERA’S COMEBACK UNLIKELY

LONDON WRITER’S OPINION I have told how it has been planned to bring the towering Italian heavyweight boxer, Primo Camera, back into the ring by a young London promoter who found him in Venice (writes B. Bennison). For good or for ill, the fight has been banned by the Boxing Board of Control, and, though the decision has been received with defiance, 1 do not think it will take place. For the foreign boxer must receive a permit, and this is scarcely likely to be given by the Home Office without the approval of the board. The board's objection to Camera is on medical grounds. They have pointed out that when the Italian was last in the ring in America he was so severely beaten that he suffered partial paralysis, and he was advised not to box again it he valued his life. "Nothing has happened to change that position,” said the board. “We have nothing else against Camera, but if he is to come back, it should be in his own country or America.” Camera himself declares that he is again thoroughly fit, and the promoter vows that he will go on with his plans to match him against a British opponent. “The board can’t stop mo,” he said. "Other boxers have been badly beaten, and have been given another chance. The board did not object to Max Baer and King Levinsky, and they have sanctioned another flight for Walter Ncusel, for which he is to receive £3200. It is unfair to put the bar up against Camera.” But I shall be surprised if the position changes. After all, it is the duty of the board to protect public interests and there is nothing unreasonable in the suggestion that Camera should justify himself at home before being brought to London. About a year ago he himself announced his retirement.
