Hobbs and Sutcliffe began England's innings together in 26 test matches between 1924 and 1930, stales an English writer. In retrospect that famous combination looks the greater when it is realised that to replace them, in only a slightly longer period, the choice has vacillated among Wyatt, P. Holme . Walters, Hammond, Bakewell. Arnold, Leyland, A. Mitchell, Keeton, Smith, Barnett, Trimblett, Fagg, J. Parks, Worthingon and Hutton. Hobbs and Sutcliffe 'ast played for England together at i he Oval in 1930, which game also saw the end of the Tate-Larwood bowling combination. They opened England’s bowling in 16 tests, and to take their places also the number of those tried is almost chaotic—Voce, Allen, Bowes, Nicholls, Al lorn, Clark, Fames, Macaulay, Hammond, J. Smith, Gover, Wellard, and now Matthews and England is no nearer solution
