John Ellis, motor-driver, aged 30, pleaded guilty at the Police Court to conducting premises in Albert Street ts a common gaming hoitee, also to lour charges of selling liquor without a licence. Mr Orr Walker, S.M., said that the worst feature of the case was that he encouraged gambling and drinking among women. Ellis was sentenced to 21 days’ gaol on one charge of slygrog selling and fined £4O on the gaming charge. “Imprisonment might not affect him very much, but it will stop others who arc similarly inclined. The fine will get at his pocket,” said the magistrate.
