PRICES OF DAIRY COWS

CAUSES OF RECENT RISE FARMERS NOT CERTAIN PALMERSTON N„ Nov. 4. The question as to whether the price of dairy cows has gone up as a result of the guaranteed price was ; debated by the Manawatu provincial executive of the Farmers' Union when information on the point was sought by Dominion headquarters. It was pointed out tha t there had been a bigiger percentage of replacements this year on account of diseases. On the (Other hand the price of cows was governed by demand, whether through disease, shortage or butterfat prices. Who could say, then, it was asked, what had caused the present rise? It was considered it would be dangerous to say definitely that it was the result of the guaranteed price. Mr. B. G. Gower said that the increased demand in the Manawatu district had been created by losses in the Waikato. Waikato buyers were operating freely at the Feiiding sales. Mr. H. Webb did not think the new guaranteed price had had any influence. The rise had been felt before that. Mr. J. Boyce thought that the increase was about 25 per cent., but that it had been due to diseases. He moved that a reply on these lines be forwarded to Wellington, and the meeting agreed.
