LIVESTOCK MARKETS

SURVEY OF MARKETS I The Farmers’ Co-op. Org. Society of | N.Z., Ltd., report on their sales during the week as follows: I The good rains experienced last week-end have been supplemented this time by trying westerly winds, restricting the growth of pastures, and a good rain would be very welcome. However, a redeeming feature is the fact that stock values have held throughout. There has been little to no change in prices during the week. Business at auction has been confirmed chiefly to the store cattle section, reject cows predominating. Work's buyers have secured their requirements at full schedule limits. Good grazier sorts also have met a ready sale. We advised last week that fat sheep and fat cattle had declined in value and this class showed no appreciation at recent sales. The market for dairy cattle is not buoyant due to the fact that the season is well advanced and the cattle that are coming forward are not up to the standard of earlier sales. Anything of quality is still sought after but at values considerably below those of two or three weeks ago. In the store sheep section at auction have been small but sales by private treaty are numerous and buyers are showing more confidence in the market now that the opening price for lamb has been disclosed.

We quote forward sales made by us as follows:—1100 m.s. (b and w.f.) lambs 21s 6d, 2500 (w.f.) wether lambs 19s, 750 (w.f.) wether lambs 19s, 1600 (w.f.) wether lambs 19s, 500 (b.f.) wether lambs 20s net, 350 (w.f.) wether lambs 20s net, 500 6-year old 1 ewes 24s 6d, 1700 early shorn wether lambs 17s 6d, 2000 wether lambs 18s, 800 m.s. Romney lambs shorn 21s, 300 (w.f.) wether lambs 18s. The Hawera Sale conducted on October 28 was an entry comprised chiefly of store cattle. Suitable paddock cattle were keenly sought after and works buyers took their requirements at full schedule rates. More pigs were forward than previously and these met a ready sale. An average yarding of dairy cattle was disposed of at late rates.
