RETURNED SOLDIERS • ASSOCIATION A very pleasant evening was recently spent by over GO members of the above association at the Majestic supper-room when the usual halfyearly meeting and smoko was held. Under the president (Mr. W. P. McLeod) the evening went along with a swing and after the business of the meeting was transacted the rest of the time was spent in the honouring of toasts, story and song. In his report the president slated that the half-year just gone by had been a most successful one and the ' association was in a very pleasing : position, both financially and numen--1 cally. Much help had been given to I members who were in need and distress had been alleviated among the returned soldiers of the district. He also stated that thanks to an energetic ladies’ committee, a strong committee of soldiers, and the generous support of the public, the Coronation ball had been not only an outstanding success, but also a financial triumph. The funds from this ball had been! diverted to the relief fund and wou.d be used only for that purpose. Members of the committee had attended well at all meetings and given every attention to business, showing by ifieir keenness that they were anxious to do their best for the organisation. Mr. F. Palmer was 'elected to fill the vacancy on the committee due to Mi. Hornibiook leaving the district. After the toast of the iHng had been honoured, members stood in silence for two minutes in order to pay their respects to two ex-soldiers who had recently crossed over, Mr. D. McAlpine and Mr. J. Havler. A lengthy toast list was ab'.y controlled and carried to a successful conclusion, the chairman in his final remarks stating that it had been a pleasure to preside over such a wellbehaved and orderly gathering. The spirit of com radship which had held men together during the dark days was still in evidence and would be to the end. Musical and elocutionary items capably rendered by Messrs. J. Steven, C Jackson, J. H. Hardie, P. Epiha, and L. Ellis added to tne enjoyment of the evening.
