SPORTS GATHERING

FIXTURE AT DENLAIR LABOUR DAY RESULTS A most successful sports gathering was held at the Public Works camp at Deniair on Labour Day, visitors coming from far afield. About one hundred children took part in the programme and some very fast times were recorded. Especially was this so in the Semple Handicap, the main event of the day, the winner of this event, N. O’Dea, a well-known Rugby player, of Fordell, doing the 100 yards in 10 2-5 with a lightweight up. The committee are to be congratulated on going on with the programme in spite of early promise of rain which gave way to a drying wind. The results are as follow: Wheelbarrow Race.—N. O’Dea 1, A. Gillespie 2. Baby Show.—Baby Anderson 1, Baby MacKinstry 2, Baby Stack 3. Long Jump.—P. Annand 1, K. 2. Slow Bicycle Race.—K. Agate 1, J. Brush 2. Boys’ 100 Yards.—M. Lynch 1, Boy Trickett 2. Girls’ 100 Yards.—P. Annand 1, G. Newbold 2. Tug-o’-war.—Married v. single men, best two of three. This even caused much amusement as the lock for the single men weighed 16 stone and he tied himself to the boards for safety. After much hard work and grunting the single men won the day by flquarter of an inch. Nail Driving (ladies).—Mrs Weir 1, Mrs Shaw 2. Stepping the Chain. —Mrs Smeath 1, Mrs Thompson 2. Semple Handicap (men to carry boys 100 yards).—N. O’Dea, 4st. 21bs., 1: A. Gillespie, 4.10, 2; B. Ransom, 6.0, 3. Time, 10 2-ssec. Track record. The winner to receive cup from Hon. Mr Semple when tunnels are through. Married Ladies’ 100 Yards.—Mrs Shaw 1. Mrs Alexander 2. Throwing the Hammer (161bs.)—H. G. Sutherland 1, R. Mitchell 2, M. Ruscoe 3.
