The ship caught fire but there were no casualties. The attacker was described as a grey seaplane bearing black crosses similar to the ’planes that attacked the Quedmellah. A Foreign Office communique states that after the attacks on French ships the Government has taken steps to determine the identity of the aggressors and will determine measures to tneet such acts. It is also moving to protect the Marseilles-Algiers airline. It is pointed out that the Quedmellah should have been readily recognisable as it prominently displayed the colours. GIJON REFUGEES MANY REACH FRANCE PITIABLE CONDITION LONDON, Oct. 25. St. Jean de Luz reports that after 200 miles in the Bay of Biscay in rough seas, occupying three and ahalf days, 220 fully-armed Asturian troops from Gijon arrived in a drifter, exhausted by t.ieir ordeal and making £ pitiful sight, struggling ashore in their tattered uniforms. A lorry-load of rifles, machine-guns, and bombs was confiscated by the police. The refugees later went to Catalonia by train, under an escort. The wounded men were taken to Bayonne Hospital. Over 6000 refugees have now reached France and more are expected. All are being transferred to Catalonia. Many suffered great hardships during the drifting for days at sea without adequate water and food. Salamanca claims that 5000 fleeing militiamen from Gijon were picked up by insurgent warships on the high seas. A La Rochelle message states that a French fishing boat arrived towing a Spanish boat in. which were 80 militiamen and several women and children from Gijon. The boat was found drifting 80 miles from the coast. THOUSANDS DROWNED Received Oct. 26, 10.30 p.m. PARIS, Oct. 26. Nearly 5000 refugees from Gijon are believed to be drowned. Hundreds leaped into tiny fishing craft, some of which foundered. Others were drowned while trying to swim to the boats.
