WANGANUI CRICKET

OPENING DAY THIS WEEK

LABOUR DAY MATCH

(By

“Umpire.”)

Opening day for the senior grade is on Saturday next. Cook’s Gardens are now opened for practice. The nets have all been pulled out from their winter resting place, and cobwebs brushed off and this week they are being tried out once again, as all teams are practising solidly for opening day.* Last Saturday most of the clubs availed themselves of a fine day for a preliminary match practice United played Collegiate, Technical Old Boys played Technical College and Marist played a practice with their junior A team. From the reports all matches were well attended. On Monday (Labour Day) a match was played between the senior representatives and the junior representatives, but owing to the unfavourable weather most of the seniors decided on a morning in bed, as at 10.45 a.m. the total muster was five. The juniors were much more keen and as there was a fairly large attendance present it was decided to start the match. The seniors had a wicket-keeper and four bowlers and it was hoped that as the day progressed other players would show up. This was what did happen and at the end of the senior innings there were nine batsmen. The result of the game is shown below. In the first junior innings Ballam (18), J. Timbs (17) and S. Wallace (15) were the top scorers in a total of 66. Wallace and Crammond holding the fort till after lunch. Glen Hook (3 for 15), E. Neale (3 for 17), and E. Anderson (2 for 15), accounted for the wickets. The seniors compiled 175. Hook and Frazer (44 and 40 respectively) made things lively with some solid hitting, Hook's total included 6 fours and one six. Neale also had a merry time, hitting 5 fours in a total of 29. He and Rich (21) were the top scorers.

The junior bowlers did fairly well under the circumstances, O’Grady (3 for 19) bowled very well; also J. Timbs (2 for 21) and Bergerson (2 for 34).

The junior second innings looked like a bit of a debacle for a start, E. Madden getting the first three wickets in quick time; but S. Wallace and Crammond stopped the rot and the innings did not close until about 5 o’clock for a total of 83. Wallace (22), O'Grady (17), and Baldwin (10) being the only double figures. Wallace batted well at a time when things were looking very black, but finally fell a victim to Frank Jacobs' “googlies.” O’Grady made amends for Wallace’s mistakes by hitting 2 sixes and a four off the same bowler. E. Madden (3 for 15, Hook (3 for 15) and Jacobs (2 for 22) took the wickets. After the rain on the week-end Cook’s Gardens looks particularly well, and the young grass should come away nicely on the wickets. JUNIORS v.
