LONDON HIDE MARKET

Weddel and Co., London, September 9, reported that the European domestic hide market had kept together very well, although conditions had been slow. Miscellaneous and Colonial varieties also found a quiet market and only a modest business had been done. Australian shippers were firm in their ideas, quoting D/S Meatworks at 9 Id to 9id, but buyers were below this basis. New Zealand hides were also quite steady and there was very little change to report in Cape sorts. “It is, of course, natural that these miscellaneous types of hides will not arouse much attention before the market as a whole becomes active. “Leather is reported to be selling quite well in this country, although the business is limited. Tanners, however, will maintain a firm attitude, certainly, this side of the leather fair which takes place in the early days of October.”
