FRIESLAND WINS

WAVERLEY CUP RACE AIRING'S SPRINT SUCCESS GOOD HOLIDAY CROWD (Special Reporter.) Keen racing and close finishes were features of tiie annual race meeting of the Waverley Racing Club, held yesterday under excellent weather) conditions after the week-end rain, which had been of material benefit to the track after the recent dry spell. The attendance was most satisfactory considering the unpromising conditions during the week-end, ana there were some 600 motor-cars in the parking area, which arrangements functioned smoothly. The totalizator. handled £12,311, compared with £11,138 10s last year and £7050 the previous year, the increase thus being £1203 10s. This must be considered most satisfactory in view of the small fields in some events. The principal event, the Waverley Cup, went to the hot favourite Friesland, with Reipar second and Gold Mission third. The Wanganui-owned Airing won the open sprint, the Brewer Handicap, with the outsider, Le Grand, second, and Rate Boy third. The distance hack event, the Moumahaki Hack Stakes, was won by Ngatirahiri, trained by his owner, R. Joanson, of New Plymouth, and afterwards the trophy donated by Mr G. Spriggens and family, of Wanganui, was presented to the winner by Miss Spriggens, after Mr H. G. Dickie, M.P. for Patea, had congratulated the owner-trainer and jockey. The second horse was the Wanganui-owned Amatory, with Student Prince third. Friesland was the only favourite to win, but the first four winners were | second in request. Good Hurdles Finish. Even Money carried £5O more than the Don Erma-Booklaw bracket in the Handicap Hack Hurdles, but Booklaw beat the favourite in a good finish. Cyclopean ran off at the first obstacle, and Gold Tor, Swift and Sure, Even Money, Booklaw and Don Erma was the order up the straight. Then Swift and Sure went to the front but was joined by Even Money at the six furlongs, and was closely followed by Booklaw and Don Erma along the back. Even Money assumed command three furlongs from home, but was challenged by Booklaw from the last hurdle, Book law winning by a head. Two lengths back was Don Erma, with Swift and Sure two lengths back. Four in Line. Dancing Lady carried £2 more than Aii.ng in the Brewer Handicap, but Airmg won in a blanket finish, with Lc Grand second. When the field settled down Airing was bowling along in front of Race Boy, Le Grand and Dancing Lady, with Lady Kyra last. Airing was just ahead of Race Boy on the home turn,' where Le Grand came through on the inside and Lady Kyra commenced to make up her leeway. In a great finish Airing got home by a head from Le. Grand, who was half a head in front ol Race Boy, with Lady Kyra only another half-head back. Dancing Lady was an indifferent fifth. Royal Romance Just Wins. Royal Romance was backed down to second favourite for the Marton Memorial Maiden and just managed to win from Captain Trevi He. Royal Romance, Fafner and St. Cedric showed out first, but Golden Pam was then taken into the lead and piloted Royal Romance, Fafner and Seaham across the top and into the straight, with Captain Treville just behind them. In the run to the judge Captain Treville headed Royal Romance but the latter made a final effort which landed him a winner by a nose. A iength and a-half back was Seaham, with Fafner, Golden Pam and Amatory next. On returning to the birdcage Burnwood collapsed and died, apparently from heart failure. Umpire’s Good Price. The favourites, Winsome Lu and All Spirit, were well beaten in the Wilson Hack Highweight, Umpire winning at a good price from Ohanga. After Umpire had led out, Gaily went to the front from Money Raid, All Spirit, Umpire and Winsome Lu. On the home turn Gaily, All Spirit, Ohanga and Money Raid were clear of Umpire, who came with a good run on the outer and eventually won going away by half a length from Ohanga, who finished fast to beat Gaily by a short head. Winsome Lu was a close fourth and Lady Hoariri, All Spirit and Money Raid were next. Friesland Wins Well. Friesland carried just about half the total invested on the Waverley Cup held of four and eventually won convincingly. After Master Limond had broken through the tapes twice they got away well, Master Limond piloting Reipar, Gold Mission and Friesiand in that order out of the straight and up the back stretch. On the home turn both Reipar and Friesland moved up to Master Limond. Reipar and Friesland were first into the straight and over the final furlong Friesland came away to win by a length. Gold Mission was two lengths back, with : Master Limond beaten off. The Trophy Race. In a good pool for the trophy race, ' the Moumahaki Hack Stakes, Umpire, ; Student Prince and Ngatirahiri were • evenly backed, the third favourite eventually winning from the littlefancied Amatory. Amatory, Kia Ora, Umpire, Ail Spirit and Ngatirahiri showed out first • but All Spirit and Kia Ora ran into ; the lead after going a couple of furlongs. Amatory, however, was again ■ in front on the home turn, with Royal ' Romance, All Spirit, Student Prince ; and Kia Ora next in order, and Nga- . tirahiri making another run which * landed him a winner by a length, j Amatory was a length ahead of Stu- . dent Prince, and Naughty Marietta and Umpire followed closely. ■

Seaham Takes the Last.

Cute Melody and Race Call carried nearly twice as much as Vadanoe and Seaham in the concluding event, the winner of which turned up in Seaham, making his second appearance on the day. Hunting Spy moved out ahead of Seaham, Vadanoe and Cute Melody, and on the home turn she was showing the way to Vadanoe, Seaham, Race Call and Lady Hoariri. In the run to the judge Scaham did best and won by three-quarters of a length from Hunting Spy, who was a similar distance ahead of Lady Hoariri. Next to finish were Race Call, Silvanus, Le Marquis and Shangri-La. | Details of results are: — HACK HURDLES. (Of £130; 1J miles). 2—Booklaw (Mr S. Cleaver), br g, aged, by Valkyrian—Ellie 9.13, S.
