MR- LYONS RETAINS OFFICE LABOUR’S SENATE GAINS IN N.S.W., VICTORIA AND QUEENSLAND (By Telegraph—Press Association — Received Oct. 24, 6.30 p.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 24. The Federal elections {Missed off quietly on Saturday There will x he no change in the Government of Australia. Mr. Lyons will be returned to power with much the same majority as he had in the last Parliament. When the counting ceased this (Sunday) morning the United Australia Party was credited with 34 seats and Labour with 28, while 12 were doubtful. The highlight of the elections was the voting in the Warringah Electorate, where the Minister of Defence (Sir Archibald Parkhill) was in danger of being defeated by an Independent United Australia candidate, Mr. Spender, K.S. Sir Archibald Parkhill at present has a lead of some seven thousand, but the allocation of preferences may wipe this out. Mr. Lyons has a substantial majority in the Wilmot Electorate. Mr. Curtin, Loader of the Federal Labour Party, is similarly situated in Fremantle. Two Ministers without portfolio, Mr. Thorby, in Clare, and Mr. Hunter, in Maranoa, are hard pressed. Mr. Thorby has a slight lead, but IVIr. Hunter is nearly three thousand behind the Labour candidate, Mr. K. Radford, though Mr. Hunter expects to win on the rural votes. SENATE ELECTIONS POSITION NOT YET CLEAR LABOUR LEADS IN N.S.W. i Received Oct. 24, 8.35 p.m. SYDNEY, Oct. 24. At the close of counting, the Senate position is not clear. Labour leads strongly in New South Wales. Victoria and Queensland, but United Australia leads in Tasmania. The other States are vague. LONDON LABOUR COMMENT Received Oct. 24, 11.5 p.m. LONDON, Oct. 24. The Daily Herald, in a leader on the Australian elections, says: “All wishes go out for a Labour victory. It is a thousand pities that there is acute dissension in the Australian Labour movement on the question of external policy, but foreign affairs are by no means the beginning and end of politics. New Zealand has shown by brilliant examples what can be achieved in home affairs by a sane, courageous Labour Administration. The Commonwealth can do the same.”

Mr. Lyons, interviewed, said that he was certain, had not a false issue of conscription been raised, the Government’s position would have been stronger than it is.
