WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

Maxwell.

The last six months, which were really the first six months of our institute year, have ben very full, coming immediately after our annual election. Many matters had to be arranged before our year’s work could begin. Arranging our programme for a year entailed a sitting in committee of about three hours, after which time we really felt that we had been actually working at the various arts and crafts instead of only talking about them. The carrying out of a programme containing such items as, each month’s business, competitions, comprising prettiest nightie, knitted articles, soap, papier mache, pickles, bottled fruit, gingerbread, queen cakes, bowls and vases of chrysanthemums, berries, violets, bulbs, etc.; demonstrations of metal work, papiei mache, talks about gardening, travel and conference, kept us fairly well occupied, but still we found time to be sociable, and all enjoyed tne monthly meetings. In May we had a very happy birthday party and another afternoon was devoted to music. At each meeting we have a special competition for girls not old enough to oecome members. On our birthday, members brought gifts of new clothing, which were sent to those Jess fortunate than ourselves. We held our children’s tea and Christmas tree, which had been postponed, almost every child in the district contributing towards the noise which is the natural accompaniment to an enjoyable party, in September we had our third spring Hower show. Considering that Maxwell is only a very small place we felt quite proud of our 25U entries. Of course it was open to everyone to enter. Besides the flowers we had a section for home industries, also well tilled. After the show all available Howers were sent to the hospital. We feel that this show has helped more in developing Maxwell than anything we have done in connection with our local W.l. It has certainly drawn the people more closely together and brought out the best that is in them. Recently, in response 1 to a request by Mr Cox, we elected a sub-committee from the W.l to act in conjunction with the C.J.C. We have upwards of 20 young members of the circle in Maxwell, and we hope they are going to benefit greatly through belonging to this wonderful movement, and in the years to come become valuable W.l. members. A hand is stealing out towards the bell, so I have only time lo add, “au revoir.”
