About three hundred thousand troops are engaged in the Chinese counter-offensive near Dazang. Big guns and ceaseless columns of Chinese reinforcements pass the dead and wounded left on the roadside. Coolies are carrying steel plates for machine-gun positions and engineers are building “pillboxes” under fire in obedience to the order to defend Dazang at all costs. But Dazang is only a name, having been demolished by the artillery and aircraft. The Japanese tried out nine of the latest type of huge naval bombers in the raid on Nanking.
