MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL (From Our Own Correspondent.) KIMBOLTON, Oct. 21. The chairman, Mr. L. T. McLean, presided over the monthly meeting of the Kiwitea County Council, which was held at Kimbolton yesterday. Other councillors present were: r. E. Tappin, J. A. T. Brown, W. PShaw, J. H. Williamson, D. T. Couper, W. G. Clapham, W. Beard and ,W. Hare. Correspondence. The following • correspondence received the consideration of the council:—From the Public Works Department, advising payment of a subsidy on the maintenance of main highways in the county from April 1, 1937, to June 23, 1937, amounting to £565 Is 3d.—Received.

From the'Kairanga County Council, forwarding £320 4s lid, being this council’s share of the heavy traffic license fees collected for the quarter ended August 31, 1937.—Received. From the Prime Minister, thanking the council for its donation towards the King George the Fifth National Memorial Fund. —Received. From the Valuation Department, advising payment of balance of subsidy on general rates collected in respect of the year 1936-37, amounting to £458 10s Id.—Received. From the Commissioner of Crown Lands, forwarding schedule of “thirds” accrued from Crown sections in the county as at September 30 last, amounting to £l2 18s 6d.—Received.

From the Palmerston North Hospital Board, forwarding statement showing the board’s present loans, including the proposed loan of £65,500. —The chairman remarked upon the growing cost of hospital upkeep and said that it was becoming more evident that the basis of contributions required altering. From the Mayor of Palmerston North, extending an invitation to the council to be represented at a meeting of local bodies to be held at the council chambers at 1.30 p.m. on Thursday, October 28, to consider the proposals respecting the celebration of Wellington’s Centennial.—lt was decided that Crs. McLean and Williamson should represent the council.

From Mr. A. S. McGregor, Rangiwahia, requesting permission to move his fence to the road line.—Granted.

Treasurer’s Report. The treasurer, Mr. W. L. Hesscltine, reported as follows on the finances of the council: County fund account, credit £382 15s lOd; employees’ accommodation account, credit, £376 15s sd; Kimbolton cemetery account, credit, £l2 14s lOd; land fund account, credit £165 17s 6d; Rangiwahia cemetery account, credit, £3 5s 6d; Waituna cemetery account, credit, £8 0s 7d. Rate Collections. The position with regard to the county rates was reported on as follows: General rates struck, £8163 3s 9d, paid, £3500 14s; outstanding to date, £4662, 9s 9d; special rates struck, £6582 2s 2d; paid, £2646 4s; outstanding to date, £3935 18s 2d Arrears (three years): General rates outstanding at April 1, £265 3s 8d; paid, £54 19s 1; outstanding to date, £2lO 4s 7d; special rates outstanding, April 1, £215 13s lOd; paid, £4l 14s lid; outstanding to date, £173 18s lid. Overseer’s Report. The county overseer, Mr. F. H. Eggers, submitted the following report on the works undertaken during the past month: Cheltenham Riding.—The sections of the Nos. 377 and 553 main highways have received frequent attention from the grader, and the roadmen have attended to other necessary maintenance work. On roads other than main highways grading work has been carried out. The roadmen have attended to maintenance work as well as assisting with the grading. Kiwitea Riding.—Coulter’s road, Perry’s, Mcßeth’s and Bryce’s lines have been improved by the grader, the roadmen assisting with the work. The usual maintenance work has received attention, and drains have been cleaned out on the Upper Beaconsfield Valley Road. A start has been made delivering maintenance metal on Coulter’s road. Waituna Riding.—The section of the No. 377 main highway in the riding has been kept in fair condition by L the grader. The roadman has been ' engaged cleaning out water-tables 1 and general maintenance work on ’ this section of road. On roads other » than main highways the maintenance work has been attended to.

Ongo Riding.—The section of the No. 377 main highway has received frequent attention from the grader. The roadman has attended to the necessary maintenance work on this section of main highway. On roads other highways the roadman has attended to the necessary maintenance work, as well as assisting with grading work in the Cheltenham riding.

Kimbolton Riding.—The sections of the Nos. 52 and 53 main highways have been dressed by the grader. A limited quantity of maintenance metal for pot-hole repairs has been carted out, and other usual maintenance work has also received attention on these sections of main highways. On roads other than main highways a section of the Terrace Road and McBeth’s line have been graded, the roadmen assisting with the work. The metalling of Dick’s road has been completed, the total quantity delivered 207 cubic yards. Pecp-o’-Day Riding.—The section of the No. 52 main highway has been improved by the power grader. The roadman has attended to other necessary maintenance work on this length, and a few loads of pot-hole repair metal has been delivered. This section of the main highway is in a fairly good condition. On roads other than main highways, the roadman on the eastern section of the riding has attended to the taking delivery of maintenance metal and carrying out necessary maintenance on the Peep-o’-Day, Bluff and Ruae Roads. On the western section, the roadman has attended to the cleaning out of water channels and culverts; also cutting back of overhanging growth and metal surface repairs. Pakihikura Riding.—The section of the No. 377 main highway has been kept in fairly good condition by the grader, and the roadman has attended to other maintenance work. On roads other than main highways the roadman has attended to necessary maintenance work, cleaning out of water tables, drains and culverts; also repairing rough sections of metal surfaces. A start will be made in about

a fortnight’s time delivering maintenance metal on the Waipura and Sandon Block roads.

Rangiwahia Riding.—Almost the whole section of the No. 52 main highway in this riding has been scarified and graded, the roadmen assisting with the work. Maintenance work has also received attention. Rani would be very beneficial to this section of the main highway. On roads other than main highways the roadmen have attended to maintenance work, as well as assisting with the same class of work in Pakihikura Riding. Some improvements have been effected on the Ruae track. The roads in the riding are in fairly good condition with the exception of a section of the Bowling Road leading to the sawmill, which is in a very unsatisfactory condition owing to the heavy timber carting.

Hautapu Riding.—The section of the No. 52 main highway in the riding is at present in a fairly good condition, but could be improved with rain and a dressing by the grader. On roads other than main highways the roadmen have attended to the removal of slips and repairing road surfaces on Mania and Kawhatau Roads. The Auputa clay section has dried up considerably but some repairs are necessary filling in ruts in various places. Most of the timber for rebuilding the small bridge on the Lagoon Road is now to hand and an early start will be made with the work. The 22ft. length new bridge on Kawa Road has been completed in a very satisfactory manner. The approaches to the bridge have been much improved by cutting back the banks. The work has been carried out by the county roadmen at a cost of £122 15s.
