ORIENTAL CLUB WELLINGTON JUBILEE ARRANGEMENTS FOR EASTER A number of former Wellington residents in the Wanganui district may be interested in a circular letter which has been sent out by the committee of the Oriental Football Club, Wellington. Here is the letter:— “It may interest many of your readers to know that in 1888 the Oriental Rugby Football Club was formed in Wellington by a band of zealous men. Probably very few it these men are alive to-day, but it occurs to my committee that possibly there may be some one of your readers who was connected with the “Magpies” in that year or in the years since. Commencing on Easter Saturday, 1938, the club is holding its jubilee celebrations, and we invite any old players in any part of New Zealand to join with us during the Easter holidays in renewing old ties and bonds of friendship. We would also welcome letters from old players and friends, and would be glad to receive items of interest, including photos, regarding the Oriental activities in years gone past; also it would assist the committee if old players would notify their names and present addresses, and the yar or years in which they played for the club. “We would appreciate your kindness in publishing this letter in your paper at an early date.—Yours faithfully, W. A. JAMESON, for the Committee, Oriental Football Club, Wellington.” DRAW WITH WIDNES LEAGUE TOURISTS MATCH SAVED JUST IN TIME. LONDON, Oct. 21. In fine but dull weather the Australian Rugby League team drew with Widnes, 13-all. Both sides showed bad handling. Weak tackling by Australia let Widnes open the score and maintain a lead. The score at half-time was 11-3 in favour of Widnes. There was little life in the Australians’ play. They were consistently losing possession of the ball. Attacking from a penalty Maclennan forced his way across and brought the score to 11-8, but Widnes again pressed hard on the Australians’ goal line and brought the score to 13-8. In the last few minutes Dawson secured the ball on his own line and, after a marvellous run, kicked. He took the ball on the bounce, outpaced his opponents, and scored between the posts. Beaton goaled.—l 3-13.
