IMPORTATION OF COINS
A PROHIBITION MEASURE THE MINISTER EXPLAINS [ Per Press Association. ] WELLINGTON, Oct. 21. “Under existing regulations the export of all coins, silver or bronze, is prohibited while on the import side there is an embargo placed on silver coins only,” stated the Minister of Finance (the Hon. Walter Nash) in a statement on the Order-in-Council published in the Gazette to-night placing an embargo on the importation of bronze coins. “The reason for this action,” said Mr. Nash, “is to prevent a practice which is being developed by firms in importing coins for advertising and other purposes.” He pointed out that the importation of coinage is entirely a matter for the State and that coinage should be used for currency and not ofr any other purposes. An earlier message stated that a regulation had been gazetted prohibiting the importation of bronze and certain other coins without the consent of the Minister.
