CHARM OF GOOD LINEN

Have you ever looked over your stock of linen—and most of us do at this time of year—and longed for something new and different witn which to dress your table? When in a Wanganui shop this week I admired some linens that had just reached New Zealand. Aristocrats of the linen world! One felt that all the linen in our cupboards would have to go and be replaced by these charming new linens. Beautiful damask table cloths—each named in .keeping with its design. And beauty lof design seems to be the keynote in [present fashions in linens. It would Ibe difficult to describe the patterns I because nothing like them has ever been seen. There are some that have a "moonglow” surface with their soft tone in hand-painting on a rich ivory ground. One really has to see these linens to appreciate their beauty. Nothing could be more dainty and enticing tor a luncheon than an oak table laid with a hand-embroidered luncheon set. One such table seen was set with modern china patterned with a scenery design which toned so well with the linen. A wreath of vividly embroidered flowers formed a large circle on another cloth of lovely woven damask, while a third had hunting scenes. A modern china dinner set gave the finishing touch to another colour scheme on a table that was most successful. The linen gave a glow that set the china twinkling softly. A pretty conceit for an early morning is the sw’eetest tea set in delicate Irish hand embroidery on coloured linen ground. Some striking tray cloths and guest towels are in such attractive designs that one cannot resist buying them the moment one sees them. Soft colourings as a background are a feature of these beautiful linens—some with the appearance of the old bleach of former years are a delight to the eye. Bedspreads in the same beau-tifully-woven materials and soft colourings are as tempting as the table (linens. Just to look at them makes I one feel it would be fun starting a collection in “all to match” pieces. Certainly, the brides of to-morrow have this chance to colour harmonise their home. Never have linens been quite so adorable as they are to-day.
