Euchre and Dance. To assist the funds for the new Putiki Church a euchre and dance is to be held in the Tuhirangi Hall, Putiki, to-night. These functions in the past have proved very successful, and it is hoped that to-night still more will attend. Good music and a satisfying supper will be features of the dance. Marton State Houses. Advice has been received by the member for Rangitikei, Mr. Ormond Wilson, from the Hon. J. A. Lee, that Mr. J. H. Jensen is the successful tenderer for the next group of six houses to be built in Marton under the Government scheme. The first houses there were built by Mr. T. J. Mcllwaine. Milk from Rabbits. The opinion that if the farmers of New Zealand secured their milk from rabbits instead of cows they would have appreciated the benefits of herdtesting long ago, was expressed by Mr. C. M. Hume (Dairy Board herdtesting supervisor) at a ward conference in Wanganui last evening. If cows were like rabbits it would be possible to show the effects on ten generations within one year and thus hold the interest of farmers. Technical Celebrations. Many enquiries are being received by the Technical College regarding the reunion celebrations which are to extend over the coming week-end, and it is anticipated that the attendance of past pupils will outdo even that of last year when the jubilee was held. Mr. and Mrs. I. E. Newton are to provide an “at home” function to past pupils on Sunday evening at 8 o’clock after a special service, which is to be held in the school assembly hall at 7 p.m. Wire Specifications. At a meeting of the Wellington central executive of the Farmers’ Union held at Marton on Tuesday it was announced that the New Zealand Standards Institute had approved standard specifications for galvanised steel fencing wire. Vendors in future would be required, on the request of purchasers, to supply particulars of the wire being sold. The president, Mr. L. Hammond, stated that the Farmers’ Union had had a representative with the institute, and when matters concerning the farming industry were being consulted the union was always consulted. Deviation Tunnels.

The portal of the Matarawa Valley end of the Deniair tunnel on the Turakina-Okoia railway deviation has been completed. One length of the concrete lining inside the tunnel has also been completed. Good progress is being made on the top and bottom headings which have penetrated the hill for about three chains. Progress on the southern end has been retarded somewhat on account of the damp country being encountered. On the northern end of the Turakina tunnel, a start has been made on the top heading and on the southern end of this tunnel work has been well advanced on the portal
