PERSONAL Mr L. G. P. Mahoney, town clerk, has returned from Wellington, where he attended the electrical engineers’ conference. Mrs F. Rowley has returned from a visit to Hawera. Mr and Mrs H. Sweet, Roadside, are visiting Nelson. Mr C. McKinnon, Palmerston North, is a visitor to Mangaweka. Mrs Con. Smith, Kawhatau. is spending a few days in Wanganui. Mr and Mrs G. Antwis (postmaster) leave to-day for their annual holidays. Mr J. Tood, Masterton, is visiting his sister, Mrs D. F. Gorringe, Kawhatau. TENNIS OPENING Under ideal weather conditions the tennis courts were opened on Wednesday afternoon by the vice-presi-dent, Mr H. Jacob. Visitors from Rangiwahia and Ohingaiti, and the local Croquet Club were well represented. Mr Jacob welcomed the visitors, members and all new members and hoped that the club would have a very successful season. He also mentioned that invitations had been received from the Rangiwahia Tennis Club for their opening, also from the local Croquet Club for their opening on Labour Day. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the ladies. MANGAWEKA DEFENCE RIFLE CLUB The annual general meeting of the Mangaweka Defence Rifle Club was held on Monday evening. Present were C. Oulsnam (president), L. Mahoney, W. A. Hamilton, A. H. Dickinson, J. G. Toms, F. P. Dickinson, A. Watkins, P. Green and M. Gardner. The previous minutes of the last generol meeting were read and confirmed and the balance-sheet was adopted. The following officers were duly elected for the year: Patron, Mr H. Johnston; president, Mr F. P. Dickinson; deputy-presidents, Messrs C. Oulsnam, A. Watkins and A. T. Dickinson; vice-presidents, Messrs J. Toms, S. Dickinson, W. A. Hamilton, B. Green, A. N. Zohs, and M. Gardner: secretary and treasurer, Mr L. G. P. Mahoney; scores registrar, Mr F. P. Dickinson; club handicapper, Mr F. P. Dickinson; dispute committee,

Messrs J. Toms, A. H. Dickinson, P. Green and C. Oulsnam. Subscriptions are to be the same a* last year if paid one month after opening day, otherwise 10s. The opening day was fixed for Labour Day. J. Toms moved that the winners of the championship belt be presented with a suitable badge. SCHOOL MEETING The usual monthly meeting of the school committee was held on Tuesday evening. After the minutes were read and confirmed accounts for £5 10s 9d were passed for payment. Correspondence was received from the Director of Education for particulars of radio receivers, and it was decided to purchase a radio 6-valve model. It was proposed to patch the weak places in the tennis court as soon as possible, and that a new net be procured. Prizes for the most improved boy and girl tennis players this season were offered and accepted. PERSONAL Mr and Mrs F. Bonnor, Kawhatau. are visiting Wellington for a few days. Work at the new post office is going on rapidly, the old building has been wrecked and the new concrete .foundations have been put down.
